Amazon.com Review

The Five Star series of war games is one of the most popular ever produced, thanks to its simple gameplay mechanics that somehow manage to capture much of the flavor of the conflict they are trying to simulate. The series began with the hallowed Panzer General, proceeded through another World War II game, a fantasy game, a space game, and finally ended up with Pacific General, a sweeping simulation of the entire Pacific theater of World War II. Despite some historical inaccuracies, an over-simplified naval combat model, and some other flaws, it still delivers a lot of entertainment for the money.

Players can cut their teeth on one of the stand-alone scenarios to get a feel for the revamped ground combat model and the entirely new naval warfare rules, but that's all just preparation for the involved historical campaigns that really make this a game worth keeping. Despite the game's theme, we had more fun with the battles involving a lot of ground units than we had with the purely naval conflicts. That's not to say the naval conflicts weren't fun. Sneaking up on an aircraft carrier battle group with a few submerged submarines is always a lot of fun, and staging air strikes from the carriers really adds a lot to amphibious operations. Whether you have an interest in the period or just like a good war game that doesn't take months of research and practice to master, Pacific General blows similar games out of the water in terms of pure fun. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Easy to play, yet delivers just the right amount of challenge
  • New naval battle model makes fleet actions exciting
  • Final entry in the popular Five Star series
Cons:
  • Too simple for war-game purists
  • Naval model could use a little more detail, considering the theme of the game

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Turn Based Strategy, August 27, 2004
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Pacific General (CD-ROM)
Pacific General is the best, the third and the last of the Panzer General games that I enjoyed. (I find Panzer General 2 and 3 graphically much better, but the maps are smaller, gameplay more confined, and Rpg elements superficially added.) Pacific General has the same system as Panzer General and Allied General with an added naval combat system. I found this game both addictive and fun. There are also free mods on the internet which allow you add scenarios and campaigns. The only thing I dislike is the sickly green colored maps.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this game., January 17, 2010

This review is from: Pacific General (CD-ROM)
I was hooked on Panzer General. Then I got Allied General. I love the turn base play. Pacific General is my favorite. I wish you could cheat a little more like when you set the dificuly level or prestige level at the begining with the simulated radio dials - It looks like you could adjust more one way or the other but it just wont let you. Maybe there is a down load or something. I did get a down load for the enhanced graphics that was free and it really looked better with more color and detail. I love the combination land, air, and sea battles. I do cheat by turning hidden units on and off between turns and for supply and weather too. I was able to get to the end with the invasion of Japan itslef. I haven't finished the reverse play where I am the Japanese. I did pay I thought was too much for the game - but I really wanted it and I still enjoy it. I was able to order the patch with mine so it would work on Windows XP. I found where you can download patches but I was glad mine came with my purchase. Very cool game for an old man like me.
