1.0 out of 5 stars Big on ambition, poor on delivery
Given such a low cover price you might think this was a pretty cheap book - until you discover how poor quality it is, information and accuracy-wise.

For example, this is supposed to be an introduction to NLP, yet it makes no mention whatever of a key feature of NLP - the meta programs (mental filters). And whilst the authors do at least mention the meta model -...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great practical introduction, August 10, 1999
This review is from: Mindworks (Paperback)
NLP can get pretty complicated with its extensive jargon and theories. Mindworks, by keeping in mind who its audience is, presents NLP in a easy-to-follow, personal style with loads of NLP techniques one can use immediately. The organization of the material is EXCELLENT; I really wish more NLP books would follow this sort of plan. Moreover, Anne Linden deftly uses real-world examples and short stories. Really, it's the clearest, most practical explanation I've ever read.

I recommend this one with NLP Comprehensive's "NLP: The Technology of Achievement." The only thing lacking with Mindworks is an extensive set of useful, thorough exercises which the latter book does offer. Read Mindworks for the theory, and "NLP: The Technology of Achievement" to practice it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have read a LOT of books on NLP..., December 15, 1999
This review is from: Mindworks (Paperback)
...this one is good for several reasons: 1. The chapters are short and to the point. 2. There is a large number of exercises that provide a way for you to explore and apply the techniques.

All in all, this is one of the better NLP books I have read

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!, January 2, 1999
By
Rob McCarter (Belmont, NC USA) - See all my reviews
As a licensed psychotherapist, I am constantly searching for tools to assist me in helping my clients "maximize their potentials." I have found the tools offered through Anne's book, "Mindworks" to be just what "the doctor (or shall I say, 'mechanic') ordered." Of all the NLP books I've read, this one IS the best. The author's writing style and frequent use of metaphor's greatly enhances the book's message and application. I plan to read and reference, "Mindworks" many times as I want to access Anne's many tools of wisdom. Thank you, Anne!

5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding how you think can help change your behavior., November 3, 1997
By
"lizhill" (Denver, CO USA) - See all my reviews
If you've ever asked yourself "What was I thinking?" or wondered why you can't seem to change your behavior despite your best intentions, maybe it's time you understood your mind. When you learn how your mind works, you can identify and then change the behavior that's stopping you from reaching your goals. Called "an owner's manual for the mind," this straightforward, accessible book explains how to build a better life through understanding and directing the way your mind represents your experiences. The book is organized around the seven principle of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP, a psychological model based on the way the brain codes learning and experience. Anne Linden has organized the basic tools of NLP to into a hardware store of practical techniques that are easy to grasp and use. These include: communicating precisely; reading the reactions of others; creating "blueprints" for success; tapping inner resources; recycling mistakes; replacing destructive behavior; and changing your perspective in order to see hidden choices. The power of Mindworks lies in trying-not simply reading-the exercises that demonstrate these techniques. Admittedly this takes some diligence on the part of the reader, but with so many tools to choose from you will definitely walk away with one or two that will provide startling insights into your behavior and motives.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!, October 30, 1999

This review is from: Mindworks (Paperback)
I got this book two weeks ago and I am half way through the book~~ I have to say that I benefit tremondously from this book. It's not difficult to read and it gives practical exercises at the end of each chapter for readers to work on so that it'll be easier to grasp the concepts being taught. I give it a 2 thumb up. Good job Anne!! ^_^

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic Self Improvement, January 23, 2002
This review is from: Mindworks (Paperback)
This text explores various facets of NLP and how it can be used to change your life. The author is the director of an NLP training center in New York City, but the writing style and presentation of the material is done in an easy to understand and conversational style. The book is also packed with examples to demonstrate the concepts, which helps tremendously in understanding how they are supposed to work. At the end of each section are practical exercises that help you apply the techniques covered in that chapter.

I really liked the way that the book is laid out in short chapters that could be read in just a few minutes. It made it easy to pick it up when I had a few minutes, read a chapter, read the exercises and apply that technique. I also enjoyed the chapter about changing behavior and working with problems that you have tried unsuccessfully to rid yourself of before. Some of the first sections seemed to spend a lot of time on basic communication techniques, which is a very important part of NLP, but it seemed repetitive to the point of being almost boring. If you find the first sections fascinating then that is great, if you find them common sense and a bit more boring then hang in there as it does get better and provide a lot of useful information before the book is completed. A good book with a lot of basic useful techniques that you can apply yourself, it is a wonderful reference that should be read several times a year to remind you that there are other techniques that you may not have tried which might help you unlock the promise of who you can be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro To NLP, January 18, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mindworks (Paperback)
Anne Linden's Mindworks is a bit different than most NLP books I've read so far. For one thing, the book is highly organized, and reads as much like an encyclopedia as anything else. You won't find the author hop-scotching from one subject to the next or throwing things at you out of context. The book is well laid out, and is truly aimed at those with little to no previous knowledge of NLP. It helps you learn the basics from the ground up.

My only real complaint about the book is that so much is devoted to theory, and so little is devoted to practical implementation of NLP. You'll find far fewer "exercises" in this book than you will in other NLP volumes.

All in all, this book is a great place to start learning about NLP, and is an excellent reference on basic NLP concepts. If you want to put NLP to work for you in a practical manner though, you'll need to look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Organized, Good Overview of NLP, April 16, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Mindworks (Paperback)
I've read various NLP books, and if I had to recommend only one book to purchase on the topic it would be this one. It gives a good, broad overview of the subject matter, and breaks the information into easy to apply sections. It also works well as a handbook, and reference book, compared to the other NLP books that I've read. It is thorough.

Each chapter is only a few pages long, for the most part. There are exercises to do at the end of the chapters; and if you hope to get any benefit from the principles of NLP, it is important to apply what you read - both doing the exercises and implimenting your personal goal plans ("objectives").

This book makes it easy to understand and impliment the principles of NLP.

5.0 out of 5 stars NLP focuses on the concept that the human brain is a sort of computer, June 9, 2008
Everyone has the ability, says "Mindworks: An Introduction to NLP - The Secrets of Your Mind Revealed". It just needs to be unlocked and brought forward to the front of one's mind. NLP focuses on the concept that the human brain is a sort of computer, and that it can be programmed how one wants it to be - to bring the most out of one's thoughts. An intriguing and informative book from first page to last, "Mindworks: An Introduction to NLP - The Secrets of Your Mind Revealed" is highly recommended for community library psychology collections.
