Reviewed by Anne Boling for Readers Favorite

Mindy Levy offers readers a candid look at her family. She readily admits that there are two important F words in her life, Food and Family. Mindy's family is Jewish. Even though I had read about some of the Jewish holidays and traditions, reading this book quickly showed me how much I did not know. Every event seems to surround food. Mommom is Mindy's grandmother; when she was extremely hungry she would say, "I'm not very hungry" and then she would eat everything in sight. Mindy's mother collects a keepsake from the table when they eat out: it could be a butter knife, salt and pepper shakers or the small coffee creamer. Laughter seems to be the bond that cemented her family together. It is amazing how laughter can make a difference in a family. When Sarah accidentally threw her two diamond rings down the garbage chute she hysterically called Mindy for help. After Mindy found the rings Sarah laughed hysterically, admitting that she would not have done the same for Mindy. Life as a step-mother is even funnier.

This book will have readers laughing out loud. I have only shared a few of the antics Mindy writes about. Life often takes us by surprise; we can become upset or we can laugh. I prefer Mindy's method for handling life in general. Mindy and her whole family laugh and they have plenty to laugh about. "Mindy's Musings" is an enchanting read. There are only 63 pages in this book but each page is filled with real life happenings that will keep the reader smiling if not laughing. Author Mindy Levy has a lovely manner of storytelling.

I'm not a big reader but read 'Mindy's Musings' at the suggestion of a friend. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories told and it made me realize my crazy family isn't so crazy after all. My wife (who knows I'm not a reader) said she hadn't heard me cackle like that in quite some time. Now she's reading `Mindy's Musings'. If you're looking for a humorous escape from the daily grind, pick up `Mindy's Musings'. You won't regret it!

I took this book on a 3 hour flight- laughed so hard and so often the guy next to me said " I've gotta know what you are reading?". Mindys Musings is so spot on ( I grew up in the same area, during the same time)- Familiar, funny, and a lightening fast read! You will be sad when the book ends, leaving you wanting more musings and Mindy's own sitcom.

This review is a tough one to write. I was entertained. The author has talent. But due to the style of this short book, I am left disheartened. 2 1/2 stars.

The stories that Mindy shared were very charming. Getting a glimpse into the uniqueness of one's family and upbringing is a treat (mostly when written with honesty and humor). I enjoyed her voice and her knack for presenting them. She embraces her quirks and her family's as well.

It appears the book was first a blog. Although this may have been the starting point, the text should have been reworked and edited into a book format (i.e., "I'm compiling some of the best for a future blog post. I hope you'll come and read more soon" or "reference to the earlier Mom vs...post"). There were misspellings, fragments and inconsistencies of how she handled phrase or words. The use of all caps and multiple question marks were overused taking away from the storytelling. Nothing an editor couldn't fix.

Because the book is filled with snippets, the character development for the supporting roles is lacking. For instance, she jumps in talking about Kevin and I am left wondering "What did I miss? Who is Kevin?" The same goes for Mr. Hyman at Dunkin Donuts. Kevin (you find out later) is her husband, I still don't know who Mr. Hyman is.

The book is too short. At its current length, it has the basis for something good, but has too many holes. This may work for a blog, but not for a book. Maybe the excerpt idea is her trademark, but I think she has an outline for a wonderful 250-400 page book. I would love to read a novel by the author if an editor was also involved.

Like Seinfeld, this is a funny book about nothing. The author has a number of observations/stories that all of us can relate to. And while we may not have thought they were that funny when they happened to us, we now see just how funny and ridiculous they are when told by someone else. The book is a quick easy read and is perfect for a few nights quiet reading (as long as no one looks at you sideways for laughing out loud). Well done Mindy, looking forward to the next "episode".

I loved this book! It's so clear and funny, poignant and brilliant. I can see Mindy as a standup comedian...What a gift for telling about the mundane in such a witty and honest way that really does your heart good. (Self disclosure - I'm part Jewish and wanted to see how she handled the nuances of that culture - which she did brilliantly.) I only wish the book was longer!

Not able to put this book down I now have a stiff neck from sitting in one position for too long. So many aspects of Mindy's life were a reflection of my own which is remarkable considering the fact that we have lived in completely different places and come from different backgrounds. Her comedic style appealed immediately and I could 'hear' Mindy's voice telling the story. The portrait she has drawn of her father is so well-rounded I laughed, loved and eventually cried. A Seinfeld fan from way back I laughed my self silly at her droll Jewish humour and the scene where she is attempting to buy coffee for her mother is hilarious.A little jewel of a read!

This book is a lot of fun, good laughs coming from sharing life with people you feel like you know. Unlike "50 Shades of Gray", the only thing people get tied up with here is anxieties. I also learned a lot. For example, I knew people collected spoons, but I never realized it could be a competitive sport. Suddenly my all-matching silverware drawer seems very drab and Midwestern. I also learned a lot about swimwear and how if you're a parent, your kids' love might be expressed with a little bit of partially-digested doughnut in it.

This is a cute little book describing events in Mindy Levy's life. Mindy finds the humor in situations we all find ourselves but never give a second thought to. In many ways she has a similar quality of observation as Larry David of Curb Your Enthusiasm fame. An inocuous momement becomes hilaorous when focused on and expanded. This book will certainly make you smile - even possibly laugh out loud.
