Book Description

3 and upP and upWorld of Language
What's a pronoun? How do you use it? Do you say "These candies are for him and me"--or "he and I?" In this addition to her acclaimed language series, Ruth Heller uses rhythmic verse and stunningly rich illustrations to show young readers how playful language can really be.

"Bold, handsome illustrations accompanied by a jaunty, rhymed text demonstrate the importance of pronouns with panache." --The Horn Book

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-6?Once again, Heller has taken a part of speech and made its function perfectly and entertainingly clear. This time it's pronouns?personal, possessive, demonstrative, indefinite, reflexive, intensive, interrogative, and relative. From cover to cover, the stylishly drawn, brilliantly colored, double-paged illustrations grab readers and don't let go. The exceptionally fluent, rhythmic text is printed in an unobtrusive font with pronouns highlighted in bright blue. Like Up, Up and Away (1991) and Kites Sail High (1988, both Grosset), Mine, All Mine is at its very best when read aloud. "Demonstrative pronouns make it clear. Those are far. These are near. They point out decisively. This is she and that is he." While younger readers are an obvious audience, be sure to introduce this title and its counterparts to elementary-grade language-arts teachers and their students. Who would have thought pronouns could be such fun??Alicia Eames, New York City Public Schools

More About the Author

"Writing and illustrating my own books have given me the opportunity to choose subjects of interest to me."--Ruth HellerAfter receiving a fine arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley and completing two years of graduate work in design at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Ruth Heller began her career designing wrapping paper, cocktail napkins, greeting cards, and coloring books. After five years of rejection and one complete revision, Heller's first book, Chickens Aren't the Only Ones, about egg-laying animals, was published in 1981. It was so successful that the sequel, and second book to be published, Animals Born Alive And Well (1982), about mammals, quickly followed. In 1983 and 1984, her third and fourth titles, The Reason For A Flower (about plants that have seeds and flowers) and Plants That Never Ever Bloom (about plants that do not) were published. She then began work on a collection of six books, the How To Hide series on camouflage and the magic of this phenomenon in nature, which covered the entire animal kingdom -- insects, birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and sea creatures. The next collection of books became a five-volume series on parts of speech: A Cache of Jewels and Other Collective Nouns; Kites Sail High: A Book About Verbs; Many Luscious Lollipops: A Book About Adjectives; Merry-Go- Round: A Book About Nouns; and Up, Up and Away: A Book About Adverbs. She also wrote and illustrated the unique and fascinating book Color, a charming and instructive guide to how art goes through the four color printing process.Among the notable people who have had an influence on Heller's writing have been: Ogden Nash, Gilbert and Sullivan, Edward Lear, Hilaire Belloc, and Dr. Seuss. Heller says of her work, "All my books are nonfiction picture books in rhyme. I find writing in rhyme enjoyable and challenging, and I think it is an easy way for children to learn new facts and acquire a sophisticated vocabulary. Children are not intimidated by big words. I try to make my writing succinct and allow the illustrations to convey as much information as possible."On October 31, 1995, Grosset & Dunlap continues Heller's parts-of-speech books with the publication of Behind the Mask: A Book About Prepositions, a clever, thoughtful, eye-pleasing explanation of just how prepositions tell us about the "when" and "where" of things.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mine, All Mine, June 15, 2000
This review is from: Mine, All Mine! (World of Language) (Paperback)
We are three teachers and a media specialist from a middle school in Utah. We have just read the book Mine, All Mine by Ruth Heller. We believe that the intended audience of this book is middle to high school, while it disguises itself as a children's book. As English teachers we would rate this book five stars in teaching our middle schoolers about uses of pronouns. But if a small child read this book, he or she would not enjoy or understand it. Just from the title, we may not have picked up this book to use in the classroom. Consequently, both audiences might be turned off. We would, however, use this book as a read-aloud with our seventh graders. We feel there is some good information presented in a fun way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hellers World of Language books for intermediate readers up, August 5, 2001

This review is from: Mine, All Mine! (World of Language) (Paperback)
I used "Mine, All Mine" and the other seven books in Ruth Heller's World of Language series in an intensive 45-hour summer English-as-a-second-language class with students exiting third through sixth grades. The students had been in this country anywhere from two days to two years when the class began, although a few had studied English for many years in their countries of origin. I used Heller's books as a fun way to introduce each section on parts of speech. Heller's eye-catching illustrations made it possible for my students to interpret new words and helped expand their vocabularies. Heller's clever poetry also made the study of grammar more enjoyable, and introduced my students to more rhyming words as well. I don't think any of the books in the series are suitable for the reading level indicated on the books (ages 4-8), unless read aloud, with much explanation, by a parent or teacher. However, I think the series is highly appropriate for advanced third graders on up. The books are properly classified as non-fiction in most libraries, and would be found with a search on the part of speech (e.g., pronouns). I should know; I had to scour three different library systems to get enough copies for my students to use! In my opinion, the series should be shelved with juvenile or educational (teacher resource) non-fiction in bookstores and libraries and not with the children's picture books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ruth Heller's makes grammar fun, August 10, 2007

I have all of Ruth Heller's grammar books. I use them in my college classes to review grammar. The drawings are colorful and really convey the meaning of the text. I recommend them for any parent or teacher who wants to teach the basics of grammar. Dolores
