5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely little book, November 4, 2007
This review is from: Mine! Mine! Mine! (Hardcover)
I bought this book after the cover caught my eye on the display shelf. The story is thought-provoking for kids, and the rhythm is fun to read. Lovely illustrations. One of my favorites for my pre-schoolers.

My 3 year grandson was having trouble sharing and he loves books. So I looked for a book about sharing. He loves this book and has really learned about sharing. I even remember that I have to share my favorite things! Now if we could only find a book about winning and losing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Writing for Children Center Book Pick, March 7, 2007
This review is from: Mine! Mine! Mine! (Hardcover)
I LOVE picture books, so I'm always happy when I find a new picture book that is as delightful as this new release from children's author Shelly Becker. From the very first page I could identify with little Gail when her "greedy" Cousin Claire came to visit and Mother told Gail she should be nice and find something that Claire would enjoy.

When Gail sees that Cousin Claire has snatched her teddy bear, she just can't take it.

Well, then I snapped (I hadn't napped),
A fury filled my head.

I scowled so bad with eyes red mad,
and this is what I said:

"MINE, MINE, MINE! You give it back!
And stop that squeaky whine.
Let's get this straight now, Cousin Claire.
See all this stuff? It's MINE!"

Gail goes on to describe her precious belongings, one by one, for Cousin Claire, letting her know in no uncertain terms that she should keep her hands off of EVERYTHING!

When Clair sobs and moans, Mom comes in once again to offer another tip for Gail. But the surprising way Gail takes Mom's advice is a hoot!

I won't give away the story here and spoil the fun for readers. I'll just say that kids aren't the only ones who will be charmed by little Gail's "dark side" and her efforts to change and learn to share.

I was amazed at how well illustrator Hideko Takahashi was able to convey Gail's and Claire's feelings through their facial expressions in such simple illustrations. But they were perfect!

This book is MUST HAVE for any preschool's (or preschooler's) library!

5.0 out of 5 stars My 3 year old loves this book!, December 26, 2011

My 3 year old loves this book! As the nightly reader, I enjoy reading this book as well. I love the rhymes and rhythms, and the pictures are expressive and fun. The pictures are great for my son and I to discuss sharing and emotions. Sometimes we take a break from the book, but the book frequently pops back up in our basket of books to read at night. I highly recommend this book if you want a fun book to read or/and you need a book to discuss sharing.

I bought this book for my young granddaughter who doesn't like to share with her little brother. Reading this book with her has made her more thoughtful with regards to her brother and she actually shares with him a little mroe readily now than she did prior to reading the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review from Books That Heal Kids, May 13, 2010
This review is from: Mine! Mine! Mine! (Hardcover)
I'm guessing 99.9% of kids go through the stage of 'Mine Mine Mine!' Oh yes, just the other day I saw kids burying coveted sand toys in the playground sandbox. Apparently, some were still learning that hoarding the toys is not cool. So it seemed like the appropriate time for a dose of Mine Mine Mine. As I read the story to kindergarteners, a wave of guilt seemed to sweep across the room. Students related to Gail's possessive behavior. At one point, a little girl blurted out, "Oh, she is really rude!" I let the outraged blurting continue throughout the first few pages, "She doesn't have any manners!" "That's really selfish!" As the story progressed the students quieted down and an overwhelming sense of empathy seemed to be developing towards Cousin Claire (Gail's victim). Author Shelly Becker does a marvelous job of making sure the reader sees how refusing to share can cause hurt feelings and you might even lose a play date. Gail's mom steps in to not just save the day but also models the importance of sharing and kindness. Liking that a lot! This is definitely my favorite book about sharing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, fun book for little kids, December 20, 2006
By
This review is from: Mine! Mine! Mine! (Hardcover)
Cousin Claire has come to visit, which is great, until she starts getting into Gail's toys! Gail is losing her temper and ripping her toys away from Cousin Claire until her mother says she has to share. So Gail goes up into the attic and finds a box of old clothes. An ugly hat, a ragged shoe, and clothes with stains. She tells Cousin Gail she'll share that box of rags with her.

Cousin Claire is unhappy and wants to go home, so Mother feeds them lunch. Gail gives Cousin Claire her spinach soup. Cousin Claire is unhappy and pitches a fit. Mother explains to Gail that she must share nice toys and good food. Gail is unhappy about that, but promises to consider it for Cousin Claire's next visit.

Mine! Mine! Mine! is a totally cute children's book for ages 4 to 6 that is sure to gain your child's attention and hold it. Both my two- and four-year-old daughters were spell-bound by the colorful photos and the cute, rhyming story line. My four-year-old wanted the story read over and over and when I tired of it, she went to find an older sibling to read to her.

Mine! Mine! Mine! is sure to be a winner with your favorite child, one they would be delighted to find under the tree on Christmas day, or as a nice gift any for any occasion.

In addition to being a well-written tale, it also teaches the child an important lesson about sharing.

Armchair Interviews says: Sharing...what a nice concept!

5.0 out of 5 stars This really is a grea book, November 23, 2006
This review is from: Mine! Mine! Mine! (Hardcover)
I read it, I own it and I love it. So do my kids.

It is a really sweet book with great images and a strong story line.

If I could write a picture book, this is the one I would write, really charming.

I have bought this for many friends and without fail, everyone loves it.

My only question is; when is the next Shelly Becker book going to be published??
