Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Gifted with an airy tenor that recalls no less than David Gates, Harry Nilsson, and Paul McCartney on one hand and Matthew Sweet and Squeeze's Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook on the other, David Mead has concocted a sophomore album that's the quintessence of deceptively breezy pop. New York-born and Nashville-wizened Mead again pays homage to economical songwriting and displays a host of artistic influences that span Tin Pan Alley, Lennon & McCartney, '70s folk pop, and post-new-wave sensibilities. Crucially, he shows allegiance to none of them, finding a refreshing liberation in the form, aided in the quest here by the subtle, haunting production of Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger. And if Mead's mostly sunny lyrical concerns could stand a dash of Big Apple tartness, it'll be hard for any pop true believer not to be charmed by the buoyant baker's dozen songs here, from the XTC-isms of "Girl on the Roof" and the title track to the early Elton John echoes of "Figure of Eight," and the spare, bittersweet melodicism of "What I Want to Do" and "Only in the Movies." --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Music Doesn't Need Labels, November 26, 2001
By "j-e-n-n" (Georgia) - See all my reviews
David Mead's sophomore release is a bit of a departure from his 1999 release, The Luxury of Time. Mine and Yours showcases Mead's maturity and growth as a songwriter; the music is more focused and intimate. Whereas The Luxury of Time had a very big sound, Mine and Yours focuses more on Mead's gorgeous voice and addictive melodies. Recorded after Mead's move from Nashville to New York City, Mine and Yours managed to capture the city's elegance and timelessness in several of the songs.

Almost every song on the release has the potential to be a classic. "Figure of Eight", "Comfort", and "Mine and Yours" are gems that prove Mead's songwriting genius. "Venus Again", "Echoes of a Heart", and "Girl on the Roof" will get into your head and stay there. "Flaming Angel", "Only in the Movies" and "No One Left to Blame" are gorgeous, haunting pieces.

Mead's classic influences make his releases catchy to everyone's ears. But what makes him stand out against the rest are his amazing vocal and songwriting talents, and his music's independence and accessibility. This stuff is so good, it doesn't need to be labeled as pop or whatever to be appreciated. Listen to David Mead's Mine and Yours -- and you'll just know it's superb music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Pop Pleasure, July 17, 2001
By Ken Yott "goodken" (Rochester, NY USA) - See all my reviews
Wow! I was beginning to believe that the Classic Pop I grew up loving (The Beatles, Badfinger, XTC, The Outfield, etc.) was dead and buried, supplanted forever by Heavy Metal Rap and Teenybopper [music]. That was until I heard David Mead's incredible new album "Mine and Yours". I overheard it in a bookstore and I could not stop tapping my ... foot! "Girl On The Roof" is, without a doubt, one of the catchiest, most infectious songs I have ever heard. I defy the listener to sit still through this little masterpiece! You'll find that each of these songs is a gem, lovingly crafted and beautifully executed. Mr. Mead has a exquisite, ethereal voice with amazing range. Other highlights include the title track, "No One Left To Blame", "Elodie", and "Figure of Eight". Take a chance and check this out. It's the REAL DEAL!

3.0 out of 5 stars Think before you buy, July 3, 2001
By A Customer
I agree with the other reviewers about elements of McCartney. However, it's not his best elements. Think Monkberry Moon Delight or Uncle Albert. It's pretty. The production is excellent, but the songs themselves consist of simplistic chords and melodies. He has an impressive voice with a nice style, but the songs are just so soft. Good for the easy listening crowd and kids.
