Product Description

Minelab's most technologically advanced detector sets new industry benchmark. The E-TRAC is Minelab's most technologically advanced detector incorporating unique Full Band Spectrum (FBS) technology and Smartfind TM discrimination (see the Images & 360 page for pictures). Its sleek, sturdy design, innovative control panel, intuitive menus, clear LCD screen, robust lightweight coil and comprehensive targeting options set the E-TRAC apart from any other detector available today. Minelab has taken the groundbreaking step of incorporating a USB interface - the E-TRAC Exchange (see the Images & 360 page for pictures). This enables you to connect your metal detector to your home computer to download and upload your E-TRAC settings, user modes and discrimination patterns. There are a number of sample patterns you can try located on the specifications page. You can build a resource library charting your success with your E-TRAC storing your valuable settings for your favorite sites - never worry about losing your most successful settings again. This advanced feature is also designed to allow you to quickly configure the E-TRAC at the touch of a button to particular detecting environments and preferred targets so you can spend less time messing about with settings and more time out in the field doing what you love doing, detecting. When it comes down to it the E-TRAC will locate valuable metal objects in a variety of mineralized ground conditions such as extremely salty soils, seawater, wet beach sand and highly magnetic ground conditions. By using the E-TRAC you can become one of the many successful detectorists who combine their passion for the outdoors with the excitement of discovering valuable coins, relics, gold and jewelry on a regular basis.

This is my dream detector. I have been researching it for a while and have found it to be the best metal detector out there. Your target price should be around 20% off retail on this and most detectors. If your vendor doesn't approach that, you have the wrong vendor, call around. Don't pay what is listed on websites manufacturers forbid advertising prices under list. It is specifically good at finding silver coins through a peppering of nails and aluminium junk. Its weakness is detecting small pieces of gold, maybe designed that way intentionally, as to not hurt the sales of Minelab's $5k gold detectors. . .

Update- 3/2012 To be more specific, I would say it is the best coinshooting metal detector out there. I take back the part about it being intentionally weak on gold to help $5,000 GPX gold detector sales. This is just how the FBS technology works, it is optimized for finding coins, not tiny pieces of gold. $1200 was approximate. To get a good deal on a detector you have to work out a deal on the phone. It isn't like most electronics where you can search Amazon and Slickdeals and know who is going to sell it to you the cheapest in a couple of clicks. In fact if you buy a metal new metal detector online, you will probably be forced to pay full retail. You might get a bonus package with junk accessories in it or you might get some good items thrown in that you don't really need, but you are better off negotiating for exactly what you want on the phone with each dealer until you get a price like I mentioned. I recommend a smaller coil in bad soil and junky site, a DD coil between 5-8 inches in diameter, a Sunray X-1 probe, or a Garrett Propointer. Don't buy the top of the line detector and accessories, until you are sure it is something you want to do. You probably want to have a few hundred hours of using an entry level detector like the Fisher F-2, Tesaro Compadre, or Ace 250, make sure it is a hobby you will stay into.

The Minelab E-trac is in the top tier of hobby level detectors. This is a hobby with a heavy dose of brand loyalty and Minelab has many loyal fans. This is not to say that one brand is better than the other because each brand has it's own approach and presentation for different personalities. I do feel however that when it comes to technology Minelab is out in front with no exceptions. The E-trac was the flagship until Minelab came out with the CTX 3030 but the capabilities are about the same as far as detecting and discrimination. The CTX has features in addition that you can read about.

Having said that, I do have one word of caution to new detectorists. The E-trac will require a significant learning curve to master and I would never recommend one as a first detector. The interface and operation is for more seasoned detectorists and it is not a 'switch on and go' detector as some might think. For the E-trac to perform to its potential it takes a LOT of time in the field and you have to learn to listen to what it says. Some detectors (most in fact) rely heavily on the screen read-out but the E-trac is more of an audio device when it comes to the way it communicates. Many people get frustrated with it and confused but once you have it down it is a bit like having a sixth sense telling you what is under the surface...but you have to listen to it and learn through experience. To me, what sets the E-trac well ahead of the pack is the discrimination capability. It reads both target conductivity and ferrous content with scaled numbers instead of the standard VDI readings of most detectors. This adds the huge advantage to identify and discriminate with much more selectivity.

This detector gives me very accurate signals and discrete, so I could know what kind of item I found before digging.
It is better to dig them all if it is very clean ground condition. Because sometimes low quality gold shares same ID with trash such as pull tabs and bottle caps.
But in trashy ground condition and so many signals, I can skip unwanted signals and save time to find the next good target.

I was using PI machine and dig them all, but avoided too trashy area.
Since I got this machine, I can go to trashy areas and find only good targets out of them.

I love it!!

Good metal detector. Took me a little getting use to as the preferred mode is different than the typical metal detector, but it works very well. Recommended.
