5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a Single, Canning Newbie with a Ceramic Stovetop, July 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mini Stainless Steel Canning Set
I am new to canning and was looking for something that would work on my ceramic stovetop (Frigidaire FEF368GC). This was perfect for me for a few reasons:

a) The burners on my ceramic stovetop are not big enough for most regular sized water bath canners.
b) I didn't want to risk damaging my stovetop with a canner that was too big (I researched dimensions online for a long time).
c) I live alone and only need to can things in small batches.
d) I'm nor interested in canning meat or anything that requires a pressure canner.

I've only used it once, but am very happy with my purchase so far. Both the pan (RSVP TGP-8 Endurance 8 qt. Stock Pot) and the rack seem to be of very good quality. Plus, you save some money ordering the set rather than purchasing the pan and rack separately. The only negative was that when empty, my wide mouth pint size jars tipped over quite a few times in the rack. They were easy to pick up with tongs and it wasn't a problem when the jars were full. So, all in all, I think this is a really good product and highly recommend it.

Things to note:

[General]
1) The description says it can hold 4 pint-sized mason jars, but I think that's only for regular mouth jars. If you use the wide mouth pint-sized jars, it will only hold three at a time. It will hold 4 wide mouth 1/2 pint jars.

2) The rack sits flat on the bottom of the stock pot. I've seen some racks with feet that keep the jars elevated 1/2" or so from the bottom of the pot. I don't know if this matters or not. I did not have any problems.

3) At first I used the largest burner I had which was 1.5 inches larger in diameter than my pan (about .75" of overhang). Then I noticed that the element was cycling on and off. I switched to the smaller burner which was a little smaller than the pan's diameter and it stayed on continuously.

I bought this canner specifically for my glass stovetop. It is perfect for small batch canning and fit the element area very well. Made quite a few successful batches of goodies. Very pleased with my purchase.

I bought this kit to teach my grand daughter how to water bath can. It is the perfect size for a nine year old to learn on.

This should work for A one or two person family that has some old family recipes and would can them for gifts and tasting
