SCSI-9: Mini EP, June 15, 2008
This review is from: Mini [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
SCSI-9 seems to be putting out a substantial amount of music on the Kompakt label. "Mini EP" is a thoroughly consistent effort featuring three solid tracks. Autumn Love and Mini are both uplifting in a manner somewhat atypical of straight techno, Gui Boratto's "Beautiful Life" notwithstanding. Where lots of techno lends itself to a darkened club atmosphere, the A side tracks exude an optimistic quality that would be equally at home while cruising around on a sunny day. The cool, crisp sounds are light, but deliberate - it is, after all, a dance record.
My favorite track is actually the B side "You Are My Monster", which is different in tone. It has a nice harmonic progression that carries through the song and supports a bit more melody than one sometimes finds in techno music.
As I've said in other reviews, I don't think SCSI-9 qualifies as 'minimal techno' because of its melodic component and because of the sometimes extensive (by techno standards) harmonic motion. It's tuneful and easy to enjoy. If you're a Gui Boratto fan, you'll probably dig this. It's representative of the best Kompakt has to offer. Check it out.
