A must anyone w/limited knowledge but thinking of M. Schnauzer,
By Ken Fishback "Ken Fishback" (Palm Beach, FL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Miniature Schnauzer (Terra Nova Series) (Hardcover)
This is my third book on the Min. Schnauzer. It is simple, adequate, and comprehensive concerning the Min. Schnauzer. The other two books were too in depth and neither was fully comprehensive like this one. This should be the first book and then build on it. Also a must for any dog owner is "How To Talk With Your Dog"(Auth.-David Alderton). Both Simple and very enjoyable reads with plenty of adequate knowledge. Both should be read prior to or immediatly following bringing these intelligent, loving, and precious animals into your live. My Miniature Schnauzer is the most comforting, loving, intelligent, easy to train dog I've ever seen or owned. It is a very warming and fulfilling experience. This is not an outdoor dog. He needs loving care and brushing every day. It is sooo worth it.

This is not a generic dog book with a section on Miniature Schnauzers. The authorities consulted are real miniature schnauzer people. Karen Britten, a breeder, being one of the primary sources. Karen has written articles on grooming Minis and is a contributor to the Simplyschnauzers.net Miniature Schnauzer forum, a valuable resource for Miniature Schnauzer owners and prospective owners. This book covers all the bases and has great photos. I agree that it should be the foundation book for a Mini library. The DVD contained is not comprehensive but has good basic info on training for a start before attending classes.
As a Miniature Schnauzer owner I would caution prospective owners that two hygiene issues not stressed enough in all the books are teeth brushing and pulling hair from the ear canals. These chores should be done daily and may not be necessary for other breeds. One other caution, these game little companions will go anywhere but if you are an outdoor person and want a companion for the field, bush or brush consider another breed. The mini's "hypo-allergenic" hair is velcro to every grass stem twig, seed, burr, foxtail, etc. that it encounters and you'll be brushing for hours to get rid of them.

While the book is attractive with many nice pictures, the content is somewhat basic and limited. Had hoped for more advanced training procedures and the enclosed CD did not provide much help.

I recently adopted a Miniature Schnauzer with a lot of health issues. This book has helped me address some of these problems so when I go to see my Vet I'm able to ask pertinent questions. Great photography. I'd recommend this book to Mini Schnauzer parents.

I knew nothing of mini-schnauzers before getting this book and now I believe I have a good, well rounded knowledge of this breed and dogs in general. It has a little bit of everything in it from the breed history, behaviors, medical issues and tips on training. If you want more specific information on training look for a book that is specific to that task. But for all around information, this book is a good start.

I've never owned a Miniature Schnauzer and I referenced this book frequently during our puppy's first 6 months of life. I was happy to find that book is highly "breed specific." The text is not a cut and paste from a general dog book then gussied up with pictures of the Miniature Schnauzer. It covers everything from training to grooming. I would have liked to see more detail regarding vaccinations, but overall it's a great resource.

I ordered a used book from HALF PRICE BOOKS in Ohio. It turned out to be brand new and included an unopened dvd on how to train your dog. Pretty awesome considering the book only cost me one penny and shipping was only $3.99. I was very pleased with my purchase. It sells for $20.00 at the local super pet store. AMazon saved me a ton of cash on this book.
