5.0 out of 5 stars Money well spent January 2, 2013

There are, of course, tons of game apps out there and most seem geared to a relatively shallow, pick-up-and-play mindset. There's nothing wrong with that, but I was looking for something with a bit more depth. Angry Birds and Cut the Rope, et al, are fun, but I can only play them in short stints.

Based on positive reviews I decided to give Plague Inc. a try, and after downloading it I played for about 5 hours nonstop.

If you can get past the creepy concept that you're trying to wipe out humanity, (which, c'mon, you can do it, it's just a game) this game hits a very sweet spot in that it's easy to learn, but has plenty of depth to add variety to each game. Plus, there are 5 (or more?) plague types. You start with Bacterial, then once you win a game on Normal difficulty you unlock Viral. I haven't beaten Viral yet because my hosts die before the infection can spread! I like that - it's this sort of detail that can make or break a game.

Now, you can spend a bunch more money to unlock things, but the game says you can unlock everything just by playing. I think it would cost something close to $20 to instantly buy everything. I DID pay an extra $.99 to unlock a gene (or whatever) where I get extra DNA when popping a blue "cure" bubble. Later in a game when the DNA is hard to come by, this has been helpful - I think it's 2-3 points per bubble, so it's not like it makes the game too easy, just helps a little bit.

Anyway, if you're looking for something with more depth, this game is a ton of fun. I'm going to keep an eye on this developer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Strategy Game January 19, 2013

I had seen Plague Inc. in my Amazon recommendations for a while. I was a bit skeptical about purchasing the app for $0.99, since from the description and some of the reviews I knew the goal of the game was to wipe out all of humanity with a virus. I didn't think a game with such a creepy goal would be fun at all. However, when I was purchasing a few apps, I decided to go ahead and give this game a try for $0.99, and I am definitely glad I did. This game has to be the best $0.99 I have spent on app purchases.
Even though the goal may be creepy, what makes this game fun is the strategy involved. You begin by infecting a country with your virus, and as it spreads and infects more people, you get "DNA points", which you can use to "evolve" your virus (giving it different abilities, like being resistent to antibioitics (under an "Abilities" tab), being able to spread through livestock or water (under a "Transmission" tab), or having a coughing or coma symptom (under a "Symptoms" tab)). You can also devolve the abilities, but you only get 2 DNA points back, even on something you spent over 30 points to get. You'll get DNA points by clicking on red and orange bubbles that randomly pop up, and also sometimes you will just randomly accumulate DNA points, though the faster people are infected the faster you get DNA points. Once your virus infects more people, humans will discover it and will eventually start working on a cure. Once a cure is found, the virus is usually quickly wiped out. Also, once a cure starts being worked on, blue cure bubbles (similar to the red and orange DNA point bubbles) will begin popping up, and if you click on them you can slow the cure. Some abilities you can give your virus will also help slow the cure.

I'm more than a little bit unstable, so when my GF bought this game, I pretty much kidnapped her Kindle and spent the weekend killing off humanity- over and over.

Now I have my own Kindle and a copy for myself. I found that I didn't have as much incentive to play once I'd unlocked everything. I've only scorched the earth a few times on my own game. But I do play it once in a while.

There is a lot more fun that you would think to be had in the few simple screens this game provides. You can begin your plague in different countries to see how their climate and other factors affect the spread. You can make it better or worse in a variety of different ways to try to coax it to work differently to affect countries that are resistant to the effects. You also have to stay on top of reducing the efficacy of cure research. It's a lot to juggle and you spend much of your game time actively participating in the game- until it all falls apart, then you can just watch the world go red. You can also lose- fail to infect every country or have the infection cured before it can spread.

Updates to the game to change the popup news stories would be nice, it gets a bit tiring to read the same funny things over and over since they're only funny once. I never had any issues with crashing or lagging. This game was so well done I went to get the rest of the company's games, only to find that aside from an expansion pack for this one, there aren't any yet. Sigh. They should make one about curing diseases or something so I can balance my karma for all these plagues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plague is fun and addicting! January 4, 2013

I bought Plague for my Kindle Fire HD, and wow this game is addicting. Who would have thought destroying the World could be this fun. Tip: You can speed up time by using the fast-forward option near the top right hand part of the screen. I highly recommend this fun and addicting game.

Pretty good game, gets a lot harder when you get up to the Prion stage. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is that it wouldn't allow you to progress time along faster. Read more
