The ?classic hot rod era? started in the late nineteen forties as GI?s returned from war and used their talents to ?soup up? cheap cars to improve both looks and performance. Few cars were better suited to customize with high performance parts and higher horsepower replacement engines than the cars of the 1930?s. Used cars were abundant; prices were low and parts plentiful. These less expensive cars served long after they passed from being practical transportation. With custom parts that added performance and good looks custom ?A? became iconic symbols for post war America. Even today some of the most popular custom cars at car shows and classic car auctions are the hot rods of the late nineteen forties and early nineteen fifties.
