This elementary Latin course for 7-10 year olds combines a basic introduction to the Latin language with material on the history and culture of Roman Britain. Pupils are drawn into the material as they read about the lives of a family living in a community at Vindolanda; the adventures of the children and the family cat and mouse provide interest throughout. The material on the community at Vindolanda can be used to supplement studies of the Romans at KS2. The grammatical content helps to develop language awareness, and provides a solid foundation from which learners can progress to further English or foreign language studies. The Teacher's Resource Book provides support, particularly for non-Classicists. It includes teaching guidelines, English translations of the Latin passages, and additional background information, plus photocopiable worksheets.

This is a very fun Latin program for children. It is very colorful, interesting, and user friendly. The author has a gift for teaching this subject to young children. If this Teacher's Resource book were priced reasonably ... I would rave about it to everyone I know and I would highly recommend it to all of my homeschooling friends. It is a great introduction to Latin for young children. It is, however, not worth the listed price, even if it came with the student book (which is an additional cost). It is a shame that this program is so overpriced.

This book is a necessity if you buy the student book and don't already know Latin. The format for Minimus is great. The problem is that it is priced for a classroom teacher who need to make copies for an entire classroom every year. I am homeschooling and added Latin at my son's request. I shelled out the money but was quite disappointed with what I received. It breaksdown to a little less than $1 per page. Considering I will only make 2 copies of the replicatable pages I really don't think it is worth the money.

If the price of Minimus Secondus comes down, I may purchase it when we finish this one. However, given the current price I plan on switching to a different book.

While the teacher's book contains some valuable ideas for expanding on the lessons, the cost of it makes it difficult to justify buying it. If you know no Latin at all and want to use the Minimus books, I would recommend getting it; otherwise the price is really out of line with how much information you actually get. It's too bad, as the student books are wonderful.
