Fantastic, eloquent, and insightful new book for all ages,
By Linda Stuart (Columbia, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mining for Freedom: Black History Meets the California Gold Rush (Paperback)
Sylvia Roberts has given us a gem of an ethnic history book that's easy to read, full of mens and womens lives, 19th C. stories, photos, and primary source material. Students and history buffs of all ages will learn a lot from it and find it a good read and handy reference work. I especially like that it does not pretend to have the last word on the subject, pointing readers towards helpful source material to continue the mining, for freedom from stereotypes and normative history. August 1st should be a special celebration day in Columbia, in honor of Billy and Charlotte O'Hara, their West Indian and American friends, and their contributions to California and the U. S.!
