Book Description

0810843242 978-0810843240 December 24, 2002
The history of mining the West has been explored and developed much less than the mines themselves. In fact, no book has been written that encapsulates the overall history of mining in the American and Canadian West.

While there is a fantastic cache of materials on the history of mining, until now there was no one source that united these materials together. Concentrated in this necessary resource are published materials on all aspects of mining in the western United States and Canada; assaying over 25,000 articles, maps, pamphlets, books, literature, and lore.

This guide will both stimulate and facilitate new research by revealing not only what has been done, but what has yet to be done, and some of the potential sources that may be used to do it.

Topics Include:
*Prospecting
*Stampedes and rushes
*Mines and mining camps
*Mining promotion and finance
*Labor and technology
*Mining laws and disutes
*Literature and lore

Editorial Reviews

Review

These two volumes are designed to comprehensively list the over 25,000 books, articles, maps, and other items related to the history of western mining. They succeed admirably....There is no other such bibliography for western mining history and culture. These volumes are thus recommended first for any library with a significant Western Americana component, and second for libraries that serve geologists and others with particular interests in western ore, mineral, and other resources. (Arba )

It is a formidable collection and it is hoped that the major research libraries will acquire the book...for those wishing to explore the principal sources that shed light on this history, this book is a valuable resource. (The Canadian Historical Review )

These two volumes may not contain everything you ever wanted to know about the mining west, but they come close. The breath of information is far greater than any other work of this nature. As a guide to sources and a spur to tackling any number of unanswered questions and open questions--including an all-encompassing history of mining in the American and Canadian West--Lingenfelter's work is unequaled. (Technology And Culture )

A massive bibliography and guide to the history and literature of the American West...Highly recommended. (Choice )

Beware that this is a two-volume work. At the full retail price ($255) you should recieve BOTH volumes. It is a good idea to inquire from any vendor who does not specify BOTH volumes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Editor's Description, January 6, 2003
By
Richard Lingenfelter (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Mining West: A Bibliography & Guide to the History & Literature of Mining the American & Canadian West (Hardcover)
There is a great bonanza of material on the history of
mining in the American and Canadian West. The purpose
of this work is to concentrate and partially assay this
ore, as an aid both to those seeking the pure metal refined
from it and to those delving for rich ore not yet worked.

This vast ore sample is divided into a general western mining
section and a mining and metallurgical technology section,
followed by regional sections for each state, province and
territory. Each section opens with a brief assay that
highlights some of the larger works that have uncovered
or enriched various phases of western mining and mining life,
but this sampling is offered only as a starting point and
much more awaits the thorough prospector. Within each regional
section the ore is subdivided into refined historical studies,
raw materials of all sorts, fictional and poetic treatments,
and bibliographical guides to further materials.

Included here are over 25,000 works on various aspects
of western mining, from prospecting, mining rushes and
mining camps, through mining finance, labor and technology,
to mining law, literature and lore. There are books,
pamphlets, broadsides, maps, music, directories, laws,
state and federal publications, dissertations, theses
and articles in scholarly journals.

It is hoped that this work will both stimulate and
facilitate new research by revealing not only what
has been done, but what has yet to be done, and some
of the potential sources that may be used to do it.
