Editorial Reviews

Book Description

A beautiful goatskin leather ESV reference Bible, in the Pitt Minion format. It uses a compact yet readable font, resulting in an elegant and slimline Bible. This Bible has black-letter text throughout and includes cross-references, a concordance and maps. The India paper has art-gilt edges and the Bible is sewn, not just glued.

ESV Pitt Minion Reference Brown Goatskin ES446X

The Cambridge ESV Pitt Minion Bible in brown goatskin leather is a treasure for any person who is fond of the great old Cambridge traditon. Let's start with the cover. This Bible is bound in genuine goatskin leather. There isn't a better leather out there for the price than goatskin. It is soft and thick, tough and yet very pliable. This Bible just feels great in your hands. When you hold it open in your hands you feel like you are holding a real Bible made in the old tradition. And it smells great!

The binding is smyth-sewn and opens flat right out of the box, which is really outstanding if you like to study at a desk or table. The page edges are art gilt, red under gold, a process that is more expensive for Bible makers but reflects a much higher quality Bible.

The paper is nice. Smooth, opaque, strong, and non-glare, so it doesn't tire the eyes. The print is quite small but readable if you have decent eyesight. This is a reference Bible with center column references, a concordance, and a nice section of maps. This is remarkable for such a small Bible.

Although available in a red-letter edition (if you want the words of Christ in red, order the black goatskin), this brown goatskin edition is black-letter, which I prefer. I have an R. L. Allan KJV Ruby Edition in Highland goatskin which is also a black-letter edition and about the same size as the Pitt Minion, so these two will make a fine pair. If Cambridge would line their Pitt Minions in leather like the Allan Bibles (or like the Cambridge Goatskin wide-margin editions), this Bible would be almost too wonderful to touch.

I did a review on the black calfskin edition of the ESV Study Bible, in it I touch on why I like the ESV, so to avoid being redundant I will just focus on what I like about this little Gem from Cambridge. I love my ESV SB, but it is a little on the heave side for travel. So, I bought this. It is compact, it has a very fine and good sewn binding, the brown goatskin leather is VERY hard wearing and durable and nice looking to boot! Very nice paper (India) so it has a % of cotton fibers in the pulp which make it a durable paper. A charming "old-world" touch is the red-under-gold on the edges nice touch gives it a sort of "rose-gold" hue. A nice detail for me on the "Brown Edition" is the fact that it is all black letter (In the words of the late NT Scholar Dr. Bruce Metzger of Princeton, "Red letters imply that the words of Christ were far more important than His deeds." Amen, both were important, plus IMHO, since ALL Scripture is God Breathed, the red-letter thing never added up for me, :Is some of the Bible "more" Inspired than others? No! Psalms and Romans are "as" God-Breathed as ,say the Gospel of St. Luke. Think about it.") Anyway it is a great Bible to Travel with and move about the house with. My Wife has a "Pitt" as well and she adores hers. Pax!

This may be the best overall ESV out there at this time, as the title suggests. Unlike the Allan and Crossway editions, Cambridge has resisted the temptation to cheap out on the text block with ones printed in China--the Pitt Minion version is printed in the Netherlands. The print is a bit small, of course, as with any of the Pitt Minion's, but still pretty legible with the paper having decent opacity. The goatskin isn't leather lined as with the more expensive esv1 Allan's, but Cambridge arguably does the best job of those without the leather lining (the Allan esv3 is not leather lined either). Perversely, the Pitt Minion version seems to have a better quality ribbon than the one's I ended up cutting out of my KJV Cambridge Concord, which would make me assume that it might be better than Cambridge's Concord Wide Margin, which leaves the PM version as arguably the best overall. (The Allan ESV1 would have a nicer binding, but still uses the same made in China text block as the ESV3 and Crossway's).

What I received.. While this bible is the best I have found after some searching, this one came used. This is a warning to all Amazon purchasers, as this has happened to two other reviewers. Mine came with the shrink wrap intact, aside from a slit cut on one end to slide the bible out. It appears that the previous purchaser was unhappy that the base of one ribbon had been glued where it wasn't flat, and had tried to fix this. He pulled on the headband to remove the gauze from the textblock and get at the ribbon, and while doing this he tore off a piece of the headband and gauze, and left it hanging loose when returned. The ribbons were also burned at the tip to prevent fraying. I have glued it back myself, as I don't want to go through the hassle of returning it only to receive another used one. I recommend that you purchase from evangelicalbible.com or christianbook.com instead.

As for the bible, top notch. It's compact at 4 3/4 x 6 7/8 x 3/4 inches. It's Smyth-sewn for longevity, and so that it lays flat when opened to almost any page. It's printed on a nice India paper that doesn't have glare under light, but does have a little ghosting/bleed through which should be expected in a bible this small. The print is dark, sharp, easily readable with adequate line spacing, and lines up perfectly on both sides to help reduce the appearance of ghosting dramatically. The words of Jesus are in a dark red that looks great, and the bible reads as easily as a larger one. It comes with cross-references in the center column, a concordance in the back, and 15 great looking colored maps. It is bound in a high quality goatskin leather that is supple and feels superb in the hands.
