Excellent quality but be aware of minor aspects., June 13, 2007
This review is from: Minister's Bible-NKJV-Deluxe (Leather Bound)
When I saw this offering by Hendrickson I thought I had finally found what I've been looking for: a quality NKJV translation in versified format without voluminous study notes and including the complete set of cross-references (as found in the MacArthur NKJV Study Bible and the Baptist Study Edition Bible). Although the manufacturing quality does seem very high, I was disappointed to find that the text is paragraph format--not versified. Unfortunately, the few images of the text I was able to check before hand happened to come from pages which appear in versified form (in places in the NT), but the majority of the text is paragraph format. So if you are looking for a text to use heavily in study, this alone may be a deciding factor. This makes it considerably more difficult to quickly find a verse--during study or especially when preaching, trying to keep track of your location. Also, the verse numbers (which appear in superscript within paragraphs) are difficult to tell apart from superscript textual notes (which describe variations between manuscript families)--both utilize numbers whereas the cross-references appear in superscript letters. Another slightly problematic aspect: if you are someone who wants to add notes, there is very little room--almost none, especially at the bottom of each page. For whatever reason, the text on the page is shifted downward so that top margin is about 1/2" minimum whereas the bottom margin is a scant 1/4". It would have been better to have 1/4" margin at the top leaving an additional 1/4" margin at the bottom for added footnotes of your own. The text itself almost exactly matches that within the MacArthur study bible--identical paragraph breaks and headings. The font size is about the same too, although the lines have less vertical separation making this text more difficult to read than the (already small) text in the MacArthur Study Bible--which is pretty small in order to make room for all the additional study notes.
Lastly, the concordance is skimpy at best: not a solid one like you'd expect in a "Minister's Bible." I would have preferred less ministry helps in favor of a more extensive concordance. (Both the updated MacArthur NKJV Study Bible and the Baptist Study Edition have a much better concordance--identical between the two.)
Although this text is well made and a nice size to handle, I rated it only a 4 because the text is somewhat small and crowded to read, no room for notes, and a lackluster concordance.
In some ways, I'm surprised they consider this a "Minister's Bible" since it is not well suited for preaching (IMHO) because of its paragraph format and crowded text layout.

Best of the best, January 26, 2009

I bought 3 other top quality NKJV Bibles on-line before I finally found this one. For me it's the near perfect Bible. It reads in paragraph form in areas of history (Bible stories), and verse form in places like the Psalm and Proverbs. The font is large enough for comfortable reading. It has just a bit more space between lines which makes it easier on the eyes than some of the other slim-line Bibles. The leather is very classical (while I like also like the more supple calf-skin Bibles, this cover gives this Bible distinction).
In the back, it has ideas that would be useful for a lay pastor (someone like me who is occasionally called on to speak/perform a wedding, etc.). For example, if ever called on to do a funeral, there is a page or so covering some ideas. While a full-time pastor might find this section a bit lacking, I liked the brevity, but also the fact that it causes you to think through some points that a non-full time pastor could likely miss.
I liked the color maps (while for me, more is better as "a picture is worth a thousand words"), they still helped paint the picture of the middle east. I also appreciated the two ribbons for book marking and how the Bible lays open nicely and naturally.
Having used numerous smaller Bibles (with much smaller fonts), I was ready for a change. While I didn't want to go as large as with the "wide margin" Bibles or ones with really large font, this one was a good size upgrade without feeling bulky (It still maintains a "slim-line" quality about it) and there is enough space for me on each page to add a few notes of my own (if I have a good pen and write small/neat).
If I were to change anything to incorporate things I liked with the other Bibles I tried, I would have preferred the words of Jesus in Red--I'm just more used to seeing that particular layout, I also think the concordance was a bit skimpy, but possibly enough to get by on. (I was actually looking for a Bible without too much in the way of cross-referencing as I'm at the place where I'd rather be led by the Spirit than just follow someone else's train of thought.)
So while it may not be a true full-time "minister's Bible," it is a perfect fit for me.
And, due to the more limited selection of quality leather Bibles available in the NKJV, this is the best I found.
