This review is from: Ministry to Muslim Women: Longing to Call Them Sisters (Paperback)
From the Preface: "At the Consultation on Ministry to Muslim Women, forty participants representing sixteen mission agencies gathered to share ideas about ministry to Muslim women" in Mesa, AZ in May 1999. While this book isn't a serious ethnographic-sociological study of Islamic women, it is an enjoyable read about the challenges of Christian women prostelizing in Islamic countries. 15 different missionary women wrote various essays on the following topics: Current issues affecting Muslim women; Muslim women in crisis; Islamic reformation and Fudamentalism's impact on Muslim women; Understanding the spiritual hunger of Muslim women (who believe Allah does not love them); Evangelism to and through family networks; Developing women leaders in Muslim background believer churches; and similar topics about Muslim womens' perceptions of their culture and the Islamic religion - such as: family honor, abused women, the male is central, polygamy, love vs. sex, etc. As one participant noted about being a missionary in the Middle East: "It is not easy to live in a culture that doesn't respect you as a woman and doesn't approve of you as an individual person" (p.244). How well this book can lead Muslims to Christ, I leave to others experiences. Missionary work: not an easy sale. Easy reading, I learned some cultural tidbits.
