Editorial Reviews

UK three CD collection. This release charts the birth of synthesized pop music in the 1980s and ultimately the roots of contemporary electronic dance music. The importance and continued popularity of '80s pop is not to be underestimated, and the emergence of serious synthesized music producers in Kraftwerk, the Human League, Heaven 17, OMD, Yazoo, Ultravox, Talk Talk, Japan, Devo, Sparks, Gary Numan, New Order and the Pet Shop Boys, all of whom massively pushed the boundaries in experimenting with (mainly) Roland synths in this era, ultimately showed the way for the House and Techno producers of the '90s to the present day. Within this more serious side there was also some brilliant, pure Synthpop from the Thompson Twins, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Thomas Dolby, Simple Minds, Propaganda, Erasure, China Crisis, Belouis Some, the Lotus Eaters, a Flock of Seagulls, Howard Jones, Blancmange and the Associates. Ministry of Sound.

Ok no wordiness this time round! In bried this compilation is quite simply outstanding! Why? 1. Cost; it's very cheap for a 3cd quality 80s album. 2. Sound Quality; to my ear the tracks are all digitally remastered! The songs are completely unmixed with a 2 second gap between each of them. They seem to all be either radio versions or 7"ers. 3. The tracks' rarity; a lot of these tracks are nigh impossible to find elsewhere never mind on compact disc. 4. Creative audacity ; You can tell whoever put this together really loved and understood 80s electro, it's track combination is bold, yes, it crosses over into new wave and a bit of pop but as a whole it works! Yet another gem of a release from MOS! If you are a fan of 80s electro you quite simply must have this Every other record label looks to these guys for a reason: They're the best in the business!

Yes, sure. I bought this thinking I'd get all my '80s favorites of the progressive/alternative radio play days (think, Steve Masters and KITS). Whoa... it's got that and some I've never heard of on these shores. Going further, who can say what was hot on the West coast was also good on the other? I trust Ministry of Sound to give us their best compilations (although some think not so much lately) and this series does not fail. Come on, people, keep an open mind. There's serious good stuff on this. Heckalot better than the other '80s CDs that are filled with embarrassingly failed attempts. I do recommend this highly.

OK, the point here is that there isn't going to be a collection of 80's electronic anthems that everyone will be happy about. I love that "Fade to Gray" is on here as well as some obscure items, but I could have done with some obscure Depeche Mode song, and something by Toyah Wilcox would have been nice. She isn't completely electronic but was heavily influenced by such in the 80's.

If you want a good introduction to great music that WASN'T playing on the radio in the 80's then check this out. You can't be disappointed.

I didn't think I would ever find a collection like this! I look forward to collecting the rest of the Ministry of Sound cds, in addition to this one and the "Anthems Alternative 80's" cd set. These are songs that are rarely, if ever, heard these days, and it is a joy to find them once again on this excellent set. If you are someone who loved these songs back when and no longer have your vinyl collection (or a way to play it) this is definitely a great purchase. The sound quality beats the old vinyl too--my old records got pretty scratchy after so many plays, this cd set sounds wonderful. For a younger person who is curious about the 80's, and may wonder what else was going on besides what you may hear on "80's radio", this is a great sampling.

Just what I was looking for...soundtrack from my youth in Venice, California. If you listened KROQ (Los Angeles) & 91X (San Diego) in the 1980s you will love this compilation. No mainstream garbage, this is definitely New Wave. 3 CD's, more bang for you buck!...It's taken 30 years but finally a good 80's New Wave Compilation series.
