Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Meet one of the most unlikely new detectives in crime fiction, wise-cracking former investigative reporter and aspiring screenwriter Aaron Tucker, who agrees to help wealthy New Jersey businessman Gary Beckwirth find his missing wife, Madlyn, in screenwriter Jeffrey Cohen's antic first novel, For Whom the Minivan Rolls: An Aaron Tucker Mystery. A mysterious minivan, a mayoral election and murder keep our hero hopping when he'd prefer to be stay-at-home dad. Given the author's Hollywood connections-prominent among the book's many blurbs is one from Larry Gelbart-the chances for a film option appear excellent.

Review

Cohen's reluctant detective is short, slight, and middle-aged, but he's a winner... A seamless, zany, original debut. -- COZIES, CAPERS & CRIMES, GERALDINE GALENTREE (LEAD REVIEW, SEPTEMBER 2002 ISSUE)

Minivan rolls merrily along. Its ideas on marriage and murder are wise, wicked, witty, and surprisingly tender ... A delightful book. -- LARRY GELBART, WRITER (M*A*S*H, TOOTSIE, OH, GOD!, BEDAZZLED, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, BARBARIANS AT THE GATE, ETC.), From the Book Jacket

So much fun ... Fans of humorous cozies will likely see that the author and main character get a long run." -- -- SUSAN ANDERSON, REVIEWINGTHEEVIDENCE.com, September 2002 issue

More About the Author

Jeffrey Cohen started life as poor street urchin, orphaned and taken in by a gang of pickpockets led by an older man named Fagin. No, wait. That's someone else, entirely.

In reality, Cohen was born in Newark, NJ during a certain year, and grew (more or less) up in Irvington, NJ, otherwise known as the Garden Spot of the Western Hemisphere.

After a childhood of normal duration, Cohen attended Rutgers College in New Brunswick, New Jersey, so as to maintain a record of never having left the Garden State for more than two weeks at a time, something which has never been equaled (or attempted, by anyone else). He studied English (when actually attending classes and not lounging at the student newspaper office), but decided to work as a journalist anyway.

Finding work (after a fashion) at the Passaic Herald-News, he served as a municipal reporter for well over six months, establishing new lows in news gathering, but managing, in his final work for the newspaper, to quote Chico Marx.

Following a hideous foray into public relations, Cohen eventually became a trade journalist, covering the consumer electronics business until someone told him to stop.

Since 1985, he has been a freelance reporter and writer, writing for such publications as The New York Times, TV Guide, USA Weekend, Premiere, American Baby and The Newark Star-Ledger, among many others.

He is also the author of more than 20 feature-length screenplays, some of which are actually good. His work has been developed by Jim Henson Productions, CBS, Gross-Weston Productions, Ken Walz Productions and others.

Cohen lives in New Jersey (big surprise!) with his wife and two children, who have been sworn to secrecy.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Rolls for Thee, June 27, 2003

Stay at home father and free lance writer Aaron Tucker is surprised when he's asked to find a missing house wife. Surely there's someone better qualified them he is. But when he's offer a thousand dollars, how can he refuse? But when he follows the few leads he has, he keeps hitting dead ends. And the supposedly distraught husband is not co-operating at all. What is really going on?

I really enjoyed this debut novel. I did have a couple complaints, however. First, while I mostly enjoyed Aaron's sarcasm, occasionally it was over done. Second, I was getting as frustrated as he was by his lack of progress for a while. But half way through, the plot really picked up and the twists kept coming. At that point, I had a hard time putting it down and stayed up late last night to finish. I liked Aaron and his family, and it was nice to see a basically happy man struggling with the day to day trials of life in addition to the mystery.

If you enjoy the lighter side of mystery, this is definitely a book to check out. I'm already looking forward to spending more time with Aaron and his family and friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars non-stop humor, July 17, 2004

A friend handed me Jeffrey Cohen's "For Whom the Minivan Rolls" and "A Farewell to Legs," telling me they were the sleeper mystery series of the year. I agree! These books are even more of an enjoyable read than Janet Evanovich's series because the humor never lets up! Cohen is a masterful writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Minivan of Delight, August 10, 2003

I have fallen hook, line and sinker for Jeffrey Cohen's hilarious new Aaron Tucker series. The inherent wackiness of suburban living is ripe for the parodying. Hypocrisy and pomposity are fair game, and Cohen doesn't disappoint. The thing I like best is that Jeff Cohen, (for all that Tucker is a happily married family man who lives in a ramshackle house in a New Jersey 'burb') doesn't bombard us with sticky sentimentality. Tucker's understandably wary view of life colors everything he thinks, feels and does. I love his brand of humor. Feeling his way, he guides us through a suburban odyssey filled with murder, mayhem and laughs. Aaron Tucker stay-at-home dad, magazine writer and freelancer extraordinnaire is one of those fictional characters that you never tire of hanging out with. Who wouldn't want him for a friend? That is the strength of Cohen's book. Tucker is, in a word, delightful.
