4.0 out of 5 stars Can you hear the brain cells pop?, August 4, 2004
This review is from: Mink Volume 3 (Paperback)
I loved Kaito St. Tail, so i tried Mink...

There are so many cliches! But you know, manipulating cliches so they are fun is a craft. Tachikawa admits she doesn't know much about computers - and there is a 650MB CD ROM that runs on Windows and Macintosh copyright 2099 to prove it! And it runs on today's laptops. And one of the heroine's girlfriends is such a whiz she can modify the program and enhance it!

The real premise of the book is "Hey! Have you ever thought of turning into the person you were meant to be? Someone cooler and cuter than the one you are now?" (from the manga's title page). The real subject of the book is, of course, first love. With a good dose of how friends help each other.

Along the way we get Pop idols, professional jealousy, cut throat distributors, teen infatuation, and enough cute to pop more brain cells than you care to think about. But if you cared about brain cells, this would not be the book you would be reading...

An added attraction is Tachikawa-san writing sidebars about her manga style and how she got started and what JPop she listened to while drawing it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Cute "Wanna-Be" Story, August 18, 2004
By
This review is from: Mink Volume 1 (Paperback)
I decided to check this book out while searching through the bookstore for a new manga. A fan of "Tokyo Mew Mew", I thought another girly-girl fantasy story might be nice.
After skimming through it, my sister purchased the book. (Much to my despair.) After she was done, I quickly read through it. It was pretty fun, although there were a few things with the story I didn't understand. (Sometimes, I got two of the male characters, Illiya and Motoharu, confused. Also, how could software from the late future work on present-day computers?) But for the most part, I enjoyed it.
As the story is about a girl who becomes a celebrity singer (who must keep her identity a secret or risk being "deleted" - I still haven't figured out whether that means losing her pop-star identity or something else), it might be a little out-there. But in the world of anime, nothing can be too wild - can it?
Overall, I didn't mind that my then- ten-year-old sister got the book, because I had a few problems with it. I'd reccomend it for the 8-12 age loop; however, I might look for books by Megumi Tachikawa in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read if ya love cute romance and humor!!^^, July 4, 2004
This review is from: Mink Volume 1 (Paperback)
To tell u the truth, i wasn't really interested in the book when i first spotted it, but skimming through a few pages made me positive to walk out with this manga.

it's about a girl named Mink who has these three friends. One is a computer geek,*not dorky, mind u* and the other along with mink are some of the many droolers and stalkers of Llliya, a pop superstar singer-who was voted most wanted boyfriend. One afternoon, Mink strikes a disturbing question lurking in the mists of her mind. Would she find anyone she loved more than Llliya? That afternoon, when she and her friends went to buy Llliya's new singlge, mink discovers a computer software instead. "Wanna-Be, made in 2099. It is a program made in the future that transforms u into your wanna-be star, but here's the catch, it only lasts 3 hours. Wehn they install the program and set it up, Mink is instantly transformed into "cyber Idol Mink" who will make everyone else seem like yesterday's news. It keep this identidy, no one but mink and her friends must every know C.I. Mink's true identidy or they will be erased from history.

It's really a great series, and the first one i've read from Megumi Tachikawa. After the first book, you're instantly hooked!!! Hope this helped!!
