Editorial Reviews

1982 found Mink DeVille in the middle of the transition from their CBGB's New York punk origins to a more subtle, rootsier sound blending soul,
R & B, Cajun and other influences. Led by Willy DeVille, whose unique
style and inimitable gravelly voice always made them stand out from the crowd, Mink DeVille released their first album in 1977 and immediately had a huge hit with the track Spanish Stroll. By the time of this appearance at Montreux in 1982 they were touring in support of the fourth album Coup De Grace and the show features tracks from across their career to that point as well as a
couple of unreleased gems including their cover of the Ben E. King classic Stand By Me.

THE FIRST TIME I SAW WILLY WAS BACK IN 1977 IN A SMALL CLUB IN NYC. I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING HIM EVER SINCE. THIS LIVE DVD DOES HIM JUSTICE. THIS IS HOW IT WAS, BUT EVEN BETTER EARLIER IN HIS CAREER. I ACTUALLY SAW HIM A FEW MONTHS LATER IN 77 AT A "BEEFSTEAK CHARLIE'S" IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY. THERE WAS ABOUT 50 PEOPLE IN THE AUDIENCE AND IT WAS PROBABLY THE GREATEST SHOW I EVER SAW. DOES ANYONE REMEMBER HIS BACKUP VOCAL BAND? THEY WERE CALLED THE IMMORTALS. THEY FIT HIS MUSIC STYLE TO A TEE. THEY ARE MISSING FROM THIS DVD. IT'S TOO BAD, WHEN THEY ENCORED BACK IN 77, STAND BY ME WAS ALSO THE ENCORE, BUT WITH A LITTLE TOUCH OF THE TEMPTATIONS "MY GIRL" IN THE MIDDLE. FASCINATING STUFF. IF YOU LOVE WILLY. YOU WILL LOVE THIS DVD. HE COULD HAVE BEEN DION DIMUCCI IN THE 50'S AND BEN E KING OR ANY OF THE GREAT SOUL SINGERS OF THE 60'S. JUST A REMARKABLE DVD FROM A FLAYBOYANT SINGER. SONGWRITER. AS A 56 YR OLD, I APPRECIATE SOUL MUSIC WITH A BLAND OF ROCK. THE SAX MAKES THE BAND, BUT THE SINGER HAS TO PRODUCE. WE WILL PROBABLY NEVER GET A DVD FROM THE EASLIEST OF YEARS, ENJOY THIS ONE, IT HAS IT ALL.

SInce there doesn't seem to be much out there on DVD of Mink Deville, i was pretty excited to finally get to see something by them, given that they were a bit before my time. This show is from 1982, and while i don't think it has the original lineup, this incarnation is very good and plays tight. Willy is in fine form vocally, sounding like a more soulful Dylan, including the terrific cover of "Stand By Me". My main (really, only) complaints with the DVD are that i wish it were longer (it clocks in a bit over an hour) and the picture quality is sometimes a bit flat and/or not totally sharp, but i chalk that up to technical limitations of the source tape, owing to technology available at the time. No big deal - the sound is very good on this, and there is a generous set list.

I'VE BEEN A FAN OF MINK DEVILLE AND LATER WILLY DEVILLE FOR A LONG TIME AND WAS EXCITED WHEN I HEARD OF THIS DVD. OVERALL, THIS IS A VERY GOOD EARLY SHOW OF TH BAND. I FIRST SAW THIS BAND IN 1984 AND WAS BLOWN AWAY. EVEN THIS DVD DOESN'T FULLY SHOW ALL THE BANDS TALENT.BUT FOR NOW ALL WE HAVE IS THIS SET OF THE EARLY STUFF.
