5.0 out of 5 stars REAL garage rock
So many bands these days try to pass off as garage rock (the datsuns, the mooney suzuki) but this stuff is REAL. All of it is covers from the 50s just like the garage rockers of the 60s (the Sonics, The kingsman, The Troggs). The singer has a fantastic voice and the guitars go together wonderfully. great album pick it up.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great band, bad lead singer
I thought I would like this band, and I do, but the lead singer can not sing. Sorry but she can not hold a tune. I like what this band is trying to do with the songs that they do, believe me I get it. But I cringe when I listen to the singing. Sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detroit Cobras Rock the House, June 20, 2002
By
This review is from: Mink Rat Or Rabbit (Audio CD)
This Detroit quintet make a sound so archaic and authentic it could almost be real slices of lost soul/garage classics. Instead it's a modern band with a fantastic singer in Rachel Nagy and wonderful taste when it comes to cover material. Though they don't write their own stuff, they artfully choose lesser known Motown and Stax stuff, along with other soulful nuggets. This is an IDEAL party album, or just a fine dose of what makes music so fun to listen to.

This band is everything the Strokes and the White Stripes try to be. Those bands may come close, but this is the real thing. Barely known R&B classics done through a gritty garage filter. If you like the Dirtbombs you've got to hear this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A SUPER-STRONG DEBUT, December 18, 2002

The Cobras are amazing. They have taken old material and put a new sheen on it, adding an exciting edge and ultimately making it their own. I change my CDs constantly, but keep coming back to this one and the follow-up, "Life, Love, and Leaving." It's not a huge investment, so do yourself a favor and buy it. See them live too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Out Of The Garage and In Your Face, May 26, 2000

The Detroit Cobras are an interesting breed:
Punky garage vocals, heavy guitar all in a blender with a true respect of R&B Classic tunes. Rachel Nagy's sneering vocal comes through on these tracks and be assured she's ready to spit in your eye if you wont get up and dance.

If you loved some of the ballsier tunes on the Nuggets and Pebbles compilations, you'll certainly go for this.

Pick it up and you wont be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A desert island disc if there ever was one, February 18, 2007

The Detroit Cobras are the garage band of your dreams. Lock up your young and most impressionable little rock 'n' roll fans, and play this for 'em at full volume. They'll be screaming for more. Book-ended by the booty-shakin' opening of "Cha Cha Twist" and the most rollicking, unrelenting cover of Jackie DeShannon and Irma Thomas' "Breakaway" that you'll ever hear, there's nary a lull and by the time "Midnight Blues" rolls around, all will be right in the world and you'll be loving life again. The grinding, roughhouse guitar is totally primal - imagine the love child of Keith Richards and Link Wray - and Rachel Nagy's smoky snarl will make you think very unangelic thoughts. An American classic, already.

You've never heard of the Detroit Cobras? What a shame. This group out of (you guessed it) Detroit is a traditional rock and roll group covering oldies you have never heard, in a way you have never heard. Fronted by a female lead singer with a gritty but perfect voice, this group ROCKS! But more than that, they're FUN - every song they do is just great fun - perfect party music.

I was turned onto this group by my wife, who has seen them play live (and met the singer in the bathroom afterward). After hearing how much she loved them, I bought all the CD's I could find of them, and we love them all. Highly recommended - you won't be disappointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Gritty Rock and Roll, No Excuses, January 11, 2008
This review is from: Mink Rat Or Rabbit (Audio CD)
Soulful R and B done up by garage band. Instantly conjures up visions of crowded smoky bars, late on a Saturday night. This is the kind of band you can imagine hitting the bar before and after going on stage. Nothing deep here, but this is an incredibly fun album to listen to. The band chooses really good material to cover and the energy is palpable. Their lives shows must just be exhausting! The Cobras are are a welcome breath of fresh air in today's polished radio/American Idol world.

4.0 out of 5 stars WHAT ROCK AND ROLL SHOULD BE, July 24, 2007

I ALWAYS LOVE TO FIND A REAL ROCK AND ROLL BAND, THAT IS NOT PRETENTIOUS, PLAYS GREAT ROCK, AND MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD WHEN YOU HEAR THEIR MUSIC. THIS CD FROM THE DETROIT COBRAS IS ALL OF THAT. RACHEL NAGY, THE LEAD SINGER, RACHEL NAGY, HAS LIMITED RANGE (SHE SOUNDS A LOT LIKE CHRISSIE HYNDE FROM THE PRETENDERS), BUT SHE CAN CARRY A TUNE AND THE MUSIC BEHIND HER FLOWS NICELY, THE BAND IS PRETTY TIGHT. IN FACT, AT TIMES YOU WILL THINK THAT YOU ARE LISTENING TO A PRETENDERS CD (WHICH IS MORE THAN OKAY). THE SONGS "HITTIN' ON NOTHING", AND "BREAKAWAY" ARE NOTE FOR NOTE REPLICAS OF THE ORIGINALS BY IRMA THOMAS (WHICH IS ALSO MORE THAN OKAY). BUT THE WHOLE PRODUCTION HAS A GREAT RECORDING QUALITY, WHICH IS SURPRISING, BECAUSE EVERY OTHER CD I HAVE FROM THIS LABEL (IT IS CALLED "SYMPATHY FOR THE RECORD INDUSTRY") HAS PRETTY BAD SOUND QUALITY (DEVIL DOGS CDS AND OBLIVIANS). BUT A TOTALLY ENJOYABLE CD. YOU WILL LIKE IT AND IT WILL GET YOU MOVIN'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detroit Sound, June 22, 2007

This group, although not widely known, plays some of the best blues based rock going on anywhere. This is the better of all their albums thus far and is highly recommended. It stayed in my active play rotation for quite some time.
