Book Description

After her dragon jockey father is injured, Minna must choose between revenge and love.

Minna has a secret. Her father, ex-dragon jockey Wynn Westerfield, will forever hold a grudge against wizards. Because it was a wizard who caused his career-ending accident, Minna struggles to hide her incredible magical powers from him...and from the world.

Evan Valentine has attended a prestigious magical academy on scholarship, although he's managed to conceal that fact from everyone. He's on the fast track to success with his apprenticeship to wizard Thaddeus Bartholomew, and Evan's carefully constructed life doesn't include a certain beautiful girl whose powers rival his own.

Although Minna and Evan don't realize it yet, their destinies have been intertwined for years. When a threat arises, Minna and Evan must travel to another reality to retrieve a dangerous magical artifact. Can Minna and Evan learn to work together, despite their mutual mistrust? Or will their explosive romantic attraction lead to disaster?

Editorial Reviews

"The plot was engaging right from the beginning, with narrative that was interesting and descriptively painted a picture for me of all that was happening to Minna, Evan, and Thaddeus. I loved the creative, magical world that Ms. Rogers put her characters in and I would like to see all of that on the big screen." 5 Stars! - Long and Short Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute Read June 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Along comes a handsome stranger on a dark and stormy night, carrying a cute little bundle of joy. What girl could resist this twosome?

Minna Westerfield was puzzled by the constant thunder and lightning storms that have been taking place all around her. Evan Valentine shows up with a wet coat wrapped around a cute little puppy, trying to find shelter after he rescued the critter. Minna tries to take care of both of them and feels sparks striking up between her and Evan. She soon finds out that he's a wizard's apprentice, but she hides her own secret from him (she's also a wizard). She's the daughter of a famous dragon racing jockey and a mom who recently passed away. Also, Minna's parents turned down a scholarship for her that would have allowed her to attend the prestigious Aldesbury School of Magic. Little does she know that Evan, the wizard Thaddeus Bartholomew, and even her own mother have secrets that will soon be revealed.

Minna misses her mother and is living with her father who's permanently retired from dragon racing due to injuries. She longs for a happy family life that never will be again. Evan grew up poor, but fortuitously landed a scholarship to attend Aldesbury School of Magic. Evan is working hard to master all the skills of being a wizard from Thaddeus who's a kind, but firm teacher. The reason for the thunder and lightning storms causes Minna to join forces with Evan and Thaddeus in a parallel universe to save the world.

This story is a wonderful concoction of fantasy and romance! I could very well imagine this story as a movie. It has all the elements that I enjoy reading about and also watching.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magically Light Read February 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Minna's father hates wizards, so Minna has had to keep her secret powers hidden from him. When the head of the wizard school and his protege show up on her doorstep asking for help to seal a rift in the fabric dividing alternate realities, Minna is forced to choose between saving the world and guarding her secret.

Minna and the wizard's protege set off on their quest to retrieve the magic letter opener and repair the rift, but they get much more than they bargain for when they realize their destinies are connected inextricably on both sides of the rift.

This a short read with a straightforward plot. It was light-hearted and clean, and fun to read. Since I hadn't read anything from this author before, it gave me a small taste of what to expect from her longer works. As a short story or novella goes, it was well done. It focused on two main conflicts: the rift had to be fixed and the two main characters had to realize they were meant for each other.

If the author wanted to make this into a longer novel, it could easily be done. I definitely would read the longer version as well. It would give more time to develop both conflicts and build suspense. As it is, the characters and setting are well written and offer an enjoyable story, including some surprising twists along the way.

I haven't read a whole lot of magic/fantasy. The genre makes me a little nervous, but S.G. Rogers did an excellent job with this story. I believe the primary age group is young adult here, but adults who enjoy fantasy will like this as well. A great book to read when you want something light, quick and fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Magic of Romance! February 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
MINNA & THE VALENTINE is an incredible blend of magic, fantasy, and romance! While the story revolves around wizardry, Ms. Rogers created two very real, down-to-earth characters -- Minna Westerfield and Evan Valentine, and of course, a loveable pup named Beast who is an endearing addition to the mix. Minna and Evan are thrown together to fix the damage caused by a wayward wizard. Conflict arises between them, but so does attraction. Minna and Evan put a lot on the line to make the world right again. I couldn't wait for them to put the troublemaking wizard in his place so they could explore the chemistry zinging between them. I loved the twists and surprises. Ms. Rogers is an expert storyteller who brings her characters to life and places them in amazing settings and unusual situations. Can't wait to read her next book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun World, Sweet Romance February 4, 2012
By 21 Days
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
My favorite thing about S. G. Rogers books are the worlds she builds! Minna and the Valentine sets before us a world with elements of modern life with fun, free-wheeling magic and dragon riding tossed in. It's a really fresh setting for this sweet YAish romance. I would have loved to see this story developed into a full-blown novel! The romance moved a little quickly for me, but I enjoyed the light, fun tone of the piece. Mr. Rhule, the dead librarian, was a real treat as was old wizard Thaddeus Bartholomew and his alternate reality counterpart! I would love to see Minna and Evan back for more adventures together! If you're tired of gloomy dystopian fiction, you will be glad you brightened your day with Minna and the Valentine!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Harry Potter? This Book's For You February 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was enthralled by the wizard elements in this story, the lovely descriptions of special "magical" effects and the charming heroine. It's a fast read, enjoyable and I wanted MORE of everything! I'm hoping the author plans to spin a much longer novel from this YA novella, with deeper conflicts and other interesting secrets to reveal.
