Book Description

Midwest January 9, 1993
For decades, the photography and text of Les, Fran, Craig, and Nadine Blacklock have showcased the splendors of Minnesota in books, posters, and calendars. Our Minnesota, first published in 1978, exemplifies the Blacklocks’ unique ability to capture the beauty of Minnesota throughout the year. A collection of the most celebrated photographs from the acclaimed Minnesota Seasons calendar, Our Minnesota also includes little-known areas of Minnesota Fran discovered while traveling the state with her husband Les. And in this third edition of Our Minnesota, twenty-four new photographs from Les, Craig, and Nadine reveal additional glimpses of the Minnesota landscape, accompanied by Fran’s colorful anecdotes. "It was a wonderful experience for us to learn to know Minnesota and her people in every nook and cranny," writes Fran. "From sunup until after dark each day, we journeyed from town to town, traveling more than seven thousand miles, talking with people, and learning about places of scenic beauty or special interest." As readers discover the highlights of this journey "from the rugged Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to the thriving urban center of the Twin Cities" they understand something else as well. "Les and I have had an incurable love affair with Minnesota for many years now," writes Fran. And within the pages of Our Minnesota, it shows.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This photographic tour of Minnesota provides a fine introduction to the natural wonders of that beautiful state. The text is a narrative describing all the regions of Minnesota. Super color photographs, many masterpieces of outdoor photography, are the book's highlight. Anyone who enjoys beautiful nature photographs will find this book a delight. Highly recommended." -- Wildlife Activist

About the Author

Fran Blacklock married Les in 1947. During the years Les was photographing, Fran acted as business and office manager. Sometimes she accompanied Les on trips, but often stayed at the home/office where her organizational skills contributed to Les' growing success.

Les Blacklock's early career included producing nature films and lecturing on humans and the environment. The Hidden Forest, co-authored by Sigurd Olson, was his first book. Later books include "The High West," "Meet My Psychiatrist," "Ain't Nature Grand!," and "Minnesota Wild." In 1976 he was presented the Association of Interpretive Naturalists Honoree Award.

Under Les' tutelage, son Craig Blacklock grew up with an appreciation of the wild and its creatures. Since 1976, he has photographed in wilderness areas over much of the United States. His and Nadine's photographs have been published nationally and internationally in books, calendars, posters, and magazines. He is the photographer or co-photographer of numerous books, including "The Lake Superior Images."

Craig's wife Nadine Blacklock worked exclusively in nature photography since 1982. She was co-photographer of several books, including "The Hidden Forest" and "Border Country: The Quetico-Superior Wilderness," and her and Craig's Cibachrome prints are in the Polaroid Corporation's corporation collection. She and Craig also team-taught nature photography workshops. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
