One of the Best Firearms Manuals I've Read, March 19, 2009
Michael Martin's book is one that every firearm owner should read. And for those that are just curious about the subject, this book is the perfect start. Although geared toward the complete beginner, I found that the book filled in the gaps in my experience and knowledge. I have conversed with the author on numerous occasions (and taken his class) and he is very gracious in answering questions and sharing even more knowledge. His ability to communicate in a clear, concise, and non-intimidating manner should appeal to the novice shooter, including women and young people. As the title indicates, the book focuses on the Minnesota Personal Protection Act and one of the book's strengths is the section on Minnesota law regarding the Act. The book shows the actual statutes on one side of the page, and a plain English explanation of the statute on the other. Regardless of the Minnesota branding, this book is valuable for anyone, in any state, to read and study. I refer to it often.
The book has an extremely attractive layout, complete with tons of full-color photographs, drawings, maps, charts, diagrams, and tables. Scattered throughout the book are historical biographies for well-known personalities such as Jeff Cooper, Samuel Colt, Massad Ayoob, Rob Leatham, etc. Also throughout the book are stories, anecdotes, and statistics to help illustrate some of the points being made. The book also includes a handy "Permit to Carry Reference Card" as well as three wallet-sized cards: Attorney contact information, "Five-Point Statement to the Police," and "911 Call if You've Exposed Your Firearm to Resist an Offense." My copy also includes coupons for a local gun shop to save on the range fees and firearms courses, which essentially made my copy almost free.
Chapter Seven is one of my favorites, as Martin covers "Gear and Gadgets for the Permit Holder." Here he goes over holsters, belts, flashlights, sights, and lasers. I appreciate how the author makes recommendations and gives the names of companies and products that he uses and trusts. This makes is much easier to go shopping amongst the hundreds of vendors out there. Other favorite chapters include Chapter Two, which covers handgun and ammunition basics, and Chapter Three which covers shooting fundamentals like grip, stance, and sight picture.
In summary, Michael Martin has written a top-notch firearms manual that covers a wide variety of topics in a concise, easy-to-read, attractive package. I constantly refer to the book and highly recommend it to all. Get the book, get some training, get your permit, join the NRA and/or other 2nd Amendment Organizations, practice, have fun, and let your representatives know where you stand.
