Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1–2—Chickens and sheep collide in a tangle of wool and feathers and pull readers into an outlandishly hilarious romp as two unconventional cows prepare a surprise for the farmer's birthday. Minnie is giving the farmer her last cream puff (left, so he can't miss it, in his slipper). Moo decides to knit a sweater, a very special sweater, but washing it reveals that it can both sneeze and talk. While both of them ignore the fact that Elvis the Rooster is missing and conclude that the sweater must be haunted, all attempts to control it and "teaching it a lesson" allow readers to laugh at their ignorance and the resulting calamity for Elvis. Cazet's colorful pen and watercolor cartoons faithfully build on the text. Nonstop action and a clever plot place this title at the top of the list for young readers ready for a slightly more complex story.—Mary Elam, Forman Elementary School, Plano, TX

About the Author

Denys Cazet is the author and illustrator of more than 25 picture books for children, including Never Spit On Your Shoes, winner of the California Young Readers Medal.

The books about Minnie and Moo are his first for beginning readers. He was inspired to tell stories about the silly cow best-friends when he passed a herd of cows in which all but two were facing the same way. The other two stood next to each other, facing in the opposite direction from the rest of the cows. He immediately dubbed the two nonconformists Minnie and Moo and imagined the adventures two cows who were loyal friends rather than followers of the herd. Mr. Cazet is currently writing I Can Read Books featuring Elvis the Rooster from the farm on which Minnie and Moo live.

Mr. Cazet was an elementary school teacher for 25 years, and has also been a school librarian and elementary school media specialist. He remains active in his local elementary school parent and advisory committees. A California native, Mr. Cazet lives with his family in the foothills of the Napa Valley.

4.0 out of 5 stars Knitting a sweater, it's not as easy as it looks, October 6, 2009
This review is from: Minnie and Moo and the Haunted Sweater (I Can Read Book 3) (Hardcover)
Minnie and Moo bring laughter and excitement to reading, and this book was a wonderful addition to our growing collection. When the cows decide to bring the farmer a birthday present, one calamity after another occur. This book is great to teach cause and effect along with inferencing and character analysis. Many of the characters in the book have established personalities. As with people, the animals portray human characteristics which are not all positive. Discussing the occasional rude remarks and asking for more positive replacement behavior help children learn acceptable responses in various social situations. As a contrast, Minnie and Moo display a sensitivity and concern toward others. Children can identify with the times their "home-made" gifts didn't turn out exactly as planned. The illustrations are wonderful and the humorous dialogue keep the children waiting for their turn to read the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Minnie and Moo are funny and cute!, October 4, 2011
By
This review is from: Minnie and Moo and the Haunted Sweater (I Can Read Book 3) (Hardcover)
My 7 year old daughter checked out allllll of the Minnie and Moo books at our city library over the summer, about 15 in all. She reads all of the books by herself and she said that this was her favorite. It was one of the first Minnie and Moo books that she read. Now that school is back in session, she is in the 2nd grade and her teacher assigned a book report/project due at the end of October. The kids can pick any new book or an old favorite. My daughter chose this book because it's cute and easy to read, plus it's close to Halloween and the title 'Haunted Sweater'...you would think that ties into the season. Don't want to give a spoil alert, but if the kids don't know the book, they wonder 'why' would a sweater be haunted.

1.0 out of 5 stars INAPPROPRIATE!!!!, August 15, 2008
This review is from: Minnie and Moo and the Haunted Sweater (I Can Read Book 3) (Hardcover)
PARENT'S BEWARE!!! This book seems innocent enough. I found myself a little taken a back with the first chapter "Fall is in the Air." The book starts out with two farm cows discussing the fall weather and being on a diet. I could get past that except for the extremely offensive material on pages 34-38. I will quote some sentences for your viewing pleasure...

"It's always you two fat cows!" "Don't call my best friend fat!" "You big fat blimp!" "No one calls me a blimp" "I am on a diet!"

I don't know about the rest of you out there, but as I was reading this book to my 6 year old daughter I found myself having to sensor the words quickly before she could read them herself. I also had to make up portions of the story to give a positive message. It's inappropriate material PERIOD!

Children are impressionable enough without adding the issues of negative body image in young girls and (I am sure) boys alike. Parent's I urge you to skip this one! It's not something one should have in their permanent library...rather burned or thrown out with the garbage!
