With this album Jan Akkerman opted to do without a producer, instead doing it himself. It clearly shows; resulting in a mishmash of music and some very poor sound mixing. This is particularly the case with the first half of the album. The rest of the album does somewhat settle down to a more cruisy mellow jazzy style. But unfortunately no numbers that really stand out. It is great to see Jan returning to his jazz roots, but the album doesn't rate as well as for example his other albums in this style; eg. "3","Pleasure Point" or "Can't stand Noise". The musicians playing along with Jan definitely are great, and Jan is still an amazing guitarist. But a good producer could have just made that difference.

I like to disagree with the other reviewers. It is a great album with upbeat music and it shows that Jan can still come with great tunes. I havent noticed any production issues but just like to enjoy the music. For me, the style is a bit between Puccini's Cafe and the Noise of Art. I bought the CD at the concert when I visited the Netherlands again after so many years. Though he keeps his supporting instruments simple, I enjoyed the piano which you can also hear on the CD. It just makes the album very accessible. The last live performance by Jan I saw before this one was 10 years earlier and though some of his style has changed, he still is magnificent.

This is an attempt at "smmooth jazz(??)by one of the most brilliant-&original jazz/fusion/prog.guitarists of all time.Equal in ability to Mclaughlin,Coryell or Holdsworth. The band members literally"Phoned in their uninspired "parts"-and-it sounds like it.There are some*(few)flourishes from Jan occaisionaly-but not enough to save it.It Laks everything Jan stands for.Larry Carlton on ludes anyone??There are many other cds by this man that truly astound in terms ability, inspiration, originality & tecnique:Go W/ 1 of his live cds. Sorry,Jan!!--

Didn't anyone read the liner notes? Jan was experimenting with process when recording this album, sharing MIDI instrumental parts among the band members over the internet and piecing it all together later. So the band were never together in the same studio. It's an experiment that doesn't entirely work; the parts don't gel, despite the quality of most of the material. "Mena Muria" in particular is a gem but there's a better live version on YouTube. Even so, to say he's lost his creative powers is a little harsh. He hasn't, and every one of his current band members is excellent. If he gets the boys together in a single studio to do the next record, it will be fabulous. In the meantime, I'll play "Focus in Time" and "C.U." a little more often than this decent but unexceptional record.
