The lyrics are wonderful, June 13, 2010

Quite possibly J. Tillman's best work to date, but you have to be in the right mood to appreciate it fully. The whole album sounds beautiful and the lyrics are some of the best I've ever heard. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is because there are one or two songs that I don't think are on par with the rest, but it's still a must buy.

An Overlooked Vein of Gold, January 29, 2010
This review is from: Minor Works (Audio CD)
I don't much care for the group--Fleet Foxes--in which Josh Tillman's the drummer. But on his own, Tillman's spare music and free-verse lyrics, combined with a voice that sounds like it's in a chronic state of heartbroken recovery, his sound is hypnotic. I have all of Tillman's CDs now, this one being the most recent purchase, and I've gotta say this one is my favorite.
If you're familiar with Tillman's voice, then further description's unecessary. If you aren't, then listen to some of the song samples for this one over on iTunes (unless Amazon's finally started carrying samples) and you can judge the harmonious intimacy of his voice for yourself. Soporific.
Now, I'm definitely a rock 'n roller; but this ain't for moshin'. Even though this album has heavy country sounds embellishment, it hasn't left my CD tray for very long over the last several weeks. As a whole, it's seamless; the tunes are gentle, lilting, poignant, and great for slow-dancing with your lady. And, if you're likewise without an intimate someone with whom to sway to the music, it works just fine as daydreaming accompaniment for the day you do finally meet her.
I rate it a solid Five Stars and give it unqualified recommendation if you also enjoy quieter, more intimate, Alt-Country that suits mature rock 'n roll sensibilities.
