If you are familiar with the teaching of Ernie Hawkins, you already know that you are on solid ground with a methodical and patient guitar teacher. So many wonderful guitarists play with skill that we can only dream of; but being a gifted guitarist does not mean that the player is a gifted teacher. A gifted teacher is one who is able to present the material in such a way as to not only instruct the student, but to hold his interest, and inspire a greater desire for learning.

Humble, patient, and with the skill to anticipate tough spots, Hawkins is a marvel as a player, but also a highly talented teacher, able to bring the Intermediate student into some terrific songs by the Rev. Gary Davis.

If you are familiar with the Rev. Gary Davis, either through playing the blues, or through Bob Dylan or other artists, you may not be familiar with some of these songs. Rags are, simply put, fun. They are fun to listen to and even more fun to play.

This DVD series is for the Intermediate guitarist, though late stage beginners with high drive will also love them, as well as the advanced guitarist who wishes to learn a whole new cache of songs that audiences will love.

Like all of Ernie Hawkins' DVDs, the camera work is second to none, and Hawkins' love of the music comes through for the student.

This is ANOTHER bargain in music lessons. The series by Ernie Hawkins on the Rev. Gary Davis is months and months of "private" lessons, with the blessed addition of the "pause" button, which I use generously, as I stop, review the accompanying TAB (which is well produced and quite clear), and return to the music.

Hawkins is clear, concise, and his gift of teaching through his quiet demeanor is disarming and inviting.

Even if you are not familiar with any of Davis' music, but you just love the blues, you will love learning these songs; especially the fun ragtime songs so unique to a pre-war period in our country, yet later part of the folk revival of the '60's. Every Dylan fan who plays guitar will love this entire series by Hawkins.
