4.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased!
I have owned this player for over 3 months and it exceeds my expectations. The big screen seems to be envied on flights, and its very clear at angles and near windows. The highest level of volume is a bit modest in public places, but with the included headsets (or cheap walkman ear buds) the sound can be boosted well above comfort. Battery life is good - I've run it four...

1.0 out of 5 stars 10.2 IN LCD would give a great picture...if it worked!!!!!
Was looking for a portable player for our 2 year old daughter (and of course us as well) to use on a trip to NY. Looked great, and for the price who would complain, more features then you can shake a stick at ($299.00 at Costco). Sold on the large screen and antishake feature. after 40 mintues, I finally figured out how to get this darn thing to play on our home TV,...

This review is from: Mintek 10.2" 16:9 Portable DVD/CD Player MDP-1060 (Electronics)
Battery life is good - I've run it four hours straight several times.

The SD/memory stick slot is for audio/mp3 only - it doesn't work with my digital camera disk. The player did work well connecting to a TV and suround sound system. Others reviewers that had problems may wish to note the "Source" button on the player determines whether it sends the picture to the player's screen or to an external component, or even takes input from an outside player.

I've had no problems with charging the battery. If you do, keep in mind that the battery must be attached and locked in - plus the power switch must be set to "off" before plugging in the AC adapter. Because the AC input is on the player, not the detachable battery, I found it simple to forget to reattach the battery first (which should be removed when not in use to avoid drainage of stored energy). One last tip, when restarting a movie that was playing earlier, some times the player says "No Disc" found, but if you hit "stop", then "open", then take DVD out and put it back in, you are ready to go again. This only happened a couple times and doesn't keep me from being enthusiastic about this player. The larger screen is worth the price difference.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good value for the price, June 21, 2005
This review is from: Mintek 10.2" 16:9 Portable DVD/CD Player MDP-1060 (Electronics)
Not the clearest LCD screen -- but pretty good for the price ($299 at Costco) with lots of features including a good-sized battery. Looking at other reviews of this and the similar 1010 model, it appears to be a hit or miss proposition -- you get one that works, or one that doesn't. Not a great way to build brand loyalty. Buying from Costco is low risk as they will accept any return (unless they've changed their policy) -- just a pain to have to bring it in for the trade. We use it as a display for an xbox, and also standalone in the car -- but try not to leave it in freezing/steaming interiors -- I've been told that temperature extremes aren't good for LCDs -- so it's a little misleading that the industry positions these things (all brands) as traveling companions (you really have to be as careful with these things as you would with a laptop computer). Here's hoping that I'll still have a working unit a few months down the road.

*** UPDATE ***
Six months and many trips later, it still works fine. I'm not sure why this and other brands of portable DVD players get such mixed reviews -- some customers have no problems, others have nothing but poblems. I've noticed that home DVD players also get very mixed reviews on reliability -- I've had a home DVD (reputable brand) player and a PC DVD player quit after just a few weeks -- maybe there's really poor quality control in this whole segment of the industry.

If there is a secret to getting this thing to work, then Mintek needs to tell us; otherwise, the only secret Mintek is keeping is that you the consumer is getting ripped off if you buy this!

Judging the other Mintek reviews out there, this is one of those companies that just can't deliver a quality product, or even a shoddy one...well heck even one that works!
