Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

At half the price of what portable DVD players with screens twice as small were commanding just a few short years before its release, Mintek's slim-bodied 10.2-inch MDP-1010 offers acres of screen for the buck. The portable player is great for enjoying your movies and music on the road or in the home. Its 10.2-inch TFT (thin-film-transistor) LCD is configured in a widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio to closely approximate the dimensions of your favorite movies. A high-capacity rechargeable lithium battery keeps your discs spinning for hours between charges, and the player also comes with separate AC and DC power adapters for use indoors, in cars and boats--you name it. Using it on the go? You'll appreciate the player's anti-skip protection for uninterrupted viewing or listening.

It's compatible with a range of media, including DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3-encoded music discs. You can even watch slideshows of your favorite digital photos on your homemade JPEG image CDs. The MDP-1010 also offers dual headphone jacks for listening with a friend (perfect for back seat kids, too) and built-in stereo speakers for headphones-free listening. Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's optical digital-audio output for direct connection to a compatible audio/video receiver, providing stunning surround sound when heard through a multichannel speaker system.

And--whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday"--the MDP-1010 stands ready to deliver the full visual potential of your DVDs, too, via progressive-scan video outputs (cable supplied). Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

A further choice of S-video and composite-video outputs (composite-video cable supplied) simplify hookup with most other televisions, making the MDP-1010 as suitable for home use as for portable viewing. A composite-video/stereo analog audio input lets you use the player's LCD for direct viewing of your camcorder, digital camera, or game console.

A supplied wireless remote control is just as useful in your home or out. Headphones are not included.

What's in the Box
DVD player, remote control, remote battery, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack, a stereo analog audio/composite-video cable, a component-video hookup cable, an AC power adapter, an AC power cord, a vehicle DC power adapter, and a user's manual.

4.0 out of 5 stars CHECK OUT, January 5, 2005

Bought at COSTCO before the holidays for $350 or so, included carrying bag, two noise suppression headphones (cheap, uncomfortable, but work good), cords and of course 10.2 player. Great picture, all the bells and whistles of other top brands. Bottom line is LARGE screen, with all necessary features, for lower price. Have used for two long trips, including a trip to Hawaii with three kids beating on it and the DVD player survived even if I didn't. Check out when shopping for a player. Only negatives are it's a bit heavy due to the large battery pack and sound through built in speakers is pretty soft. Sound through headsets or hooked to soundsystem works fine.

I ordered this device through amazon about 6 weeks ago. It seemed like a great deal compared to the price of other portable dvd players. When I first received it everything seemed to be in working order. The monitor display was crisp, and the audio was mediocre. However within 24 hours of me opening the box, the ac adapter failed to work at all. The only way I could get power to my device was buy using my cigarette lighter adapter. If I wanted to charge the players battery I had to use my car. I called Minteks customer support and they said they would call me back within a week to solve the problem. 6 weeks later and I have yet to receive their call back. If this wasnt bad enough, 6 weeks after opening the box the player completely failed on me. Any dvd I put in my player now cannot ever be read. I kept the player in fine condition, never bumping or dropping it, and one day it just stopped working. Since the warranty lasts only a month I cannot get a refund, so basically I feel I like I have had $300 practically stolen from me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Major Disk Incompatibility, January 8, 2006
This review is from: Mintek MDP-1010 10.2-Inch Widescreen Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
Techies, purchased what appears to be the Costco package of the 10.2" Mintek their MDP-1070. It has poor compatibility with a wide range of DVD media. I own a Panasonic set-top DVD burner, have used the discount media such as GQ from Fry's and other bargains. Virtaully all failed to work on this player. Then took the same disks to Fry's and tried their players. The 7" Sony (the one I will be buying next) played them all without a hickup. The Panasonic did too, as well as the Samsung. Watch out for the Toshiba--there were issues here too. The Mintek which is feature rich, attracted me because of the SD memory card slot and USB port. However, what I discovered was that a good player such as the Sony and Samsungs seem to have a composite INPUT which allows you to hookup your digital camera or camcorder directly, so both the SD card slot and the USB slot are only nice-to-haves, not show stoppers. The "noise-cancelling" headphones (as do most of the cheapies) with the Mintek produce hiss from the cheap electronics. The hiss is so annoying that you may want to shut-off their amp (you can still use headphones without the amp/noise cancellation). And the cancellation ability is virtaully non-existant around the house with higher frequencies (may work with lower frequencies on a plane--but did nothing in my bathroom with the exhaust fan on). If you are a digital photography buff (stills/camcorder) watchout for the Pansonic portable dvd players, apparently they do not have video inputs. The super high end ones may have an SD memory card slot though. The Mintek manual is in Changlish, a combination of English with some poor Chinese/English translation. It is very limited in usefullness. Think I accidentally discovered in the manual that the battery life was 2.5 hours--this is hiden on the Mintek website, on all packaging and at Costco.
