Great value, nice little DVD player!,
This review is from: Mintek MDP-1770KIT 7-Inch Portable DVD Player Kit (Electronics)
*****For the money, this DVD player is very nice---note that it is more than just a player---it is a kit! It comes with all accessories, cords, batteries, etc. so you only need to spend the purchase price. This was nice for me because I would have no idea which accessories to buy. It even comes with 2 headsets and a Y adapter! Many functions run off of the player itself, and the rest off the remote. The fast forward and fast backward are only on the remote not the player, but the chapter forward and backward are on the player. I am satisfied with how things are set up. It is the first DVD player I've ever had, and I think it makes an excellent entry-level player. I really wanted to buy something sturdy but inexpensive, and this one fit the bill; I have heard other reviewers of other DVDs complain about what is on the remote and what is on the player, but I'm not picky. One fun feature it has is the fast forward and backward multiply each time you hit it (first time is 2X, second time is 4X, etc.---all the way up to 16X). I like this because with the subtitles on, I can fast forward through boring parts of DVDs and still quickly read what, if anything, is going on. It has many more features than I would ever use. The picture quality looks great to me. The battery life is supposed to be 3 hours, and so far, that seems about right. I would recommend this DVD player kit for families with children (who will be hard on the player, so you wouldn't want to spend a fortune on it!) and entry-level purchasers.

I have 3 portable DVD players, and I've had this one longer than any of them. It has been used a lot by my kids and me over the past 3 years, and it's still going strong, which is more than I can say for my Panasonic. The set includes a decent case, car power adapter, and 2 headphones with an audio signal splitter, not to mention the tremendous functionality. As for battery life, I let Return Of The King run on it and the battery died at just over 2 1/2 hours (not great, but Amazon sells extra batteries for this unit, and for the price, it's hard to complain). One great feature that the product description doesn't include is the A/V input. You can play video games on this, or view your digital photos straight from the camera, etc, since you can plug an audio and video source in. Depending on the type of game console you have, you may need to get an adapter to convert the RCA output from your game unit to 1/8 inch miniplug format to plug into the DVD player, but these are easily bought on Amazon or other electronics stores (ie, Radio Shack) for less than $10. If your game unit or other outside video source has RCA jacks, then you're all set because this DVD player comes with a cable that has RCA plugs at one end and miniplugs at the other. But if you have a GameCube (no RCA jacks, just RCA cables), or a digital camera with a USB-RCA cable, then you'll need to get the RCA-miniplug adapter (again, it's cheap). Here's how you can input video to the screen on this DVD player. There is a switch on the side of this DVD player that toggles the A/V jacks from output to input, thereby telling the screen to display the DVD or an outside video source. Just make sure you switch the A/V back to output before you try to watch a DVD again. If the switch is on input and you try to watch a DVD, all you get is a black screen. I thought mine was broken until I toggled the switch back to output, then the DVD displayed fine. I wonder if any of the other people who said their screen stopped working accidentally toggled this switch to input? I was a little nervous when I first bought this, since it was an unknown company, but they're still around 3 years later, and their product has held up very well. The only reason for 4 out of 5 stars is that it's a bit bulkier than some other units, but that's pretty minor.

After weeks of research and after by chance finding this little player in a local store (FutureShop Canada), I finally had myself a portable DVD player. This review is based on short term ownership so I can not speak about reliability, durability etc.To start with, the player is REGION FREE which was a must for me as I travel between Europe (Code 2) and America (Code 1) a lot. You simple select the country in the preferences and voila, its play time! It comes with remote which is handy although I do not expect to use it much (will have the player in my lap!) but its nice to have though. The power-supply is a non-switching 110v one which will not work in Europe (230v), but as the player uses 12 volts DC it is not a problem to find general-purpose power-supply and run it from this instead. A car adapter is included as well which is great for recharging the unit (or view DVD's). It's size is what I like the most, only slightly larger than a portable CD player and a snap-on battery which unlike other models, do not double its size! I've seen many similar models which looks much more bulky and with smaller screens. The display itself is very nice, bright and not too narrow-angled - 2 people sitting next to eachother will have no problem what-so-ever with visibility! In moving sequences, it is possible to detect the interlaced drawing of the image but this is really only noticable when you look for it and can hardly expect more for such a cheap (non-progressive scan) unit. Naturally due to the 16:9 scale, widescreen DVD's looks the best (uses all the screen). Another note about the screen is that you can spot slightly more brightness on the edges of the screen (probably due to a mirror-effect on the alu sides) but again this is really only noticable in black sequences and when you look for it. If you want the purest and best in image quality, get a Panasonic or Toshiba portable but expect to pay much much more! However, if you, like me, needed a cheap unit which was small, region-free, can be hooked up as a monitor (Composite video in!) and play MP3 as well then you really do not go wrong with this one! On a final note; the sound is as can be expected, no problem with that except naturally the units tiny speakers are not for plane travelling but who tries that anyway without a noise-cancelling headset?!? Finally, unlike other similar players, this unit HAS a recharge indicator so you can see when its done!

My family loves having this little DVD player... we've mostly used it for the tv's without DVD players, and for our car. With the car kit (DC adapter, Y-splitter, headphones, case), it becomes the perfect travelling companion for my 2 young kids (2.5 and 1 yrs). They love watching their children's DVD's in the car, especially when a trip longer than 15 minutes gets to be boring! When we attach the case to between the front seats, they are both able to see the screen without any problems from each side in the backseat. Even the volume is loud enough for them to hear in our somewhat noisy car.The remote control is easy to use, and I love that it is so small! (credit-card sized). The only complaints that I have are that the remote should include the On/off switch and volume control. I wish all remotes were this small and lightweight! The fast-forward and rewind features on the remote are really handy to have. This kit also includes the cables to hook up your portable player to any TV, the battery, AC and DC adapters. It was awesome that they included everything you would need in the whole package. We didn't need to buy anything additional for our travelling entertainment package. I did a lot of research for other (bargain-value) 7" portable DVD players, and I was trying to decide between an Audiovox 1730 or a Mintek 1770. With the $200 price on Amazon for the Mintek 1770KIT, this was a great buy!

I want to say we have been researching and doing a lot of looking for about 2 years for a portable dvd, I finally purchased this one, it came with everything that we needed two headphone, bag , car connection, house as well as the cables for the video I guess it may be for like one of the game console if you want to play on it, I have to say I was very impressed I let it charge overnight and the next morning we put it in the car, firt the screen is a good size 7 inches you can watch it from the side without it being dark, the picture is excellent quality very clearand sharp. I loved the headphones we have two children and I didn't want to have to lister to ther movies, we put it in the bag between our seats and it worked great we have a honda crv. it is easy to work the buttons may son is five and was working the controls with ease as well as our four year old. It played through 10 episodes of scooby doo which are 30 minutes long before the battery started to drain,, I thought five hours of straight playing was great I also liked the fact when it did die when I plugged in the car adapter it started right back in the middle of the episode instead of going back to the beginning, I loved that feature, basically I have had it just a few days but we all love and for price it is great, I would highly recommend it people who want something for the money or who is on a budget as we are, it was well worth the money. One thing I did notice it does tend to get warm near the battery but I don't know if that is normal for all portables or not,I hope this will help we recommend it , great value for all you get.

A luxury I now can't live without,

I'm pleased with this player. I did considerable research, and was hesitant about it but there was no way I was going to spend over 200 bucks just to have something to pass the time on the plane. Surprisingly good picture, good sound. Battery life is a little shy of 3 hours, so you can use it for two movies if you plan carefully. The picture is a little misleading because it is shown without the battery, which attaches to the back and adds size and weight. When I first got the player I couldn't get the battery charger light indicator to light like it was supposed to. Called the customer support and it was an easy and fast fix. I just was being too gentle in snapping in the battery. The player is a little heavier than I'd like, but the next generations of these things will solve that. I've now watched about 20 movies and am still very happy with my purchase. By the way, documentation arrived with the player offering an extended warranty for a nominal price of $30 I think for a year. This fact isn't advertised but it might persuade somebody to give it a whirl to get around the measly 90 day warranty.

As a mother who is always in the car, it was becoming really hard to travel with my son. So we started looking at every DVD player on the market. Went to a lot of stores and talked to a lot of people. We go on long trips every month and that was becoming a nightmare, so we found this one. Well I read every review on here and any other site I could find and it is all true. I live in a very pothole community and it never skips. It is great my son has no problem seeing it in the day or night. I have it hooked up between the drive and passenger seat so he doesn't kick it and it works great. I love the remote! The only thing I wish it had were volume control on the remote, but I haven't found one player anywhere with that feature. I am extremely happy with it! I did a lot of price comparision too and this is a GREAT deal.

I'll keep this short. This player is an unbelievable unit for the money! I usually buy Sony, but at more than twice the price, no way. The picture is wonderful and it is made very well, not like the Initial DVD Player. The colors are true and there are some amazing features that even the Sony or Panasonic don't have! I am amazed at the way this is made, solid as a rock! I am thrilled with this unit and I have a feeling if it is treated well, will last forever. This has tought me that even though I'm used to buying the high end brands. You can get a lot more bang for the buck if you look around. Well done Mintek! Worth more than you're selling it for! If you are looking for a personal DVD Player, this is the one! You won't be sorry!!!

We bought this in May for an upcoming trip. While on the trip the dvd player's picture started going in and out. We ended up having to send back to Mintek. After more than a month with multiple emails and calls they shipped us a new one. After 2 weeks, the picture on this one just goes black while playing. Plus, they didn't honor the rebate that we sent in <printed the one on Amazon>.
Don't waste your money on this peice of crap.

I ordered this DVD player in the beginning of June. At that time, it had pretty good reviews. It seemed a value for it's price. Well...1) It took four weeks to arrive (The estimate said 1-3). 2) The battery pack was defective. The customer service at Mintek (very personable...NOT!) said to mail it back. I wasn't in the mood to pay shipping on something that was defective out of the box. And God knows when they would actually send me a replacement. 3) I went back to read the reviews since I ordered it, and it was obvious that this is not a quality product. I didn't want to keep it and wait for when the display would go (like everyone elses). **I would not recommend this product, but if you purchased it and it is still within 30 days, Amazon will take the return. You'll have much more luck with Amazon, than with customer service at Mintek** By the way, I just ordered the Panasonic LS50. |
