The One Minute Presenter by Warwick John Fahy shows us how to become a more effective presenter. I love how he has designed his book for three different reading speeds. For really fast reading, each chapter starts with three columns: Content; One Minute Learning; and Process. It's easy to skip around in the book to find your specific problem area, and then go back to peruse those chapters.

Mr. Fahy is a great communicator as you can see in how he lays out the "Roadmap" for a great presentation. He offers a lot of information on how to overcome fear, treasure your audience, and my favorite chapter--Produce Your Message. He walks you through giving a presentation, step-by-step, and ends with a strong finish. It's an easy and fast read, and I recommend this to anyone wanting to give a winning presentation.

The premise of the book is acknowledging and overcoming the fact that people's attention spans are getting shorter and shorter, due to technological gadgets and demanding schedules. After the introductory material, the book takes you through "stations" of topics based on your level/interest. Topics include:

- tips and strategies to overcome public speaking fears
- finding the right level of detail to present for diverse audiences (audience analysis)
- examples of desired outcomes and how to create them
- creating a concise purpose ("high concept"--like an elevator speech)
- creating taglines
- how to connect with your audience and engage them (building rapport)
- adjusting your speaking voice to add emphasis and energy (vocal variety)
- managing interruptions during a presentation*
- conducting a smooth question-and-answer session (mastering extemporaneous speaking)
- rehearsal time and strategies (one hour of rehearsal per minute of presentation)
- how to shorten a presentation "on the fly"

The illustrations, charts, and navigational signposts kept the material interesting and made it easy to follow. The one downside of this book is the lack of editing. I noticed editorial issues throughout the book: numerous typos (several in the first chapter), missing/extra words in sentences, a few rushed/incomplete transitions, incorrect grammar usage, and the index needs some work. To some people this would be a turnoff that may cause them not to read the rest of the book. A few other notes--In the beginning of Part 3, the author quoted himself, which seems a little strange to me. Part 3 consists of only one chapter, and it is only a few pages.

"The One Minute Presenter" is yet another book on the subject of effective presentations and it stands out as one of the best. Not only does author, Warwick Fahy know his topic, but he also knows how to communicate it in a way that engages the reader.

The book is well written and cleverly structured. Like a good presenter should, Fahy grabs your attention from the outset by relating the dropping (and smashing) of a large watermelon from a tall building, to our average attention span - both are a mess! After that start, it's two short chapters to pose the question "Nobody's listening" and provide the solution "Help is here", before introducing the road map of "Your journey".

"Your Journey" is in fact the eight stations along the road map to an effective presentation. Fahy very cleverly suggests that you should tick the stations you want to stop at, depending on your need. He also provides suggestions on how to get the best out of the book depending on your speed of reading - Step by Step, Jump Around, or Jet Ski.

Each chapter starts with an overview of Content, One Minute Learning, and the Process. Each of these is in bullet form and gives the reader a very clear idea of what's in store at this stop.

Chapters (stations) often have side-bars with personal stories or expert's tips. This enables the reader to follow the flow of the chapter and refer to the side-bar as and when ready. Each of the eight stops commences with a short case study of someone experiencing difficulty with this aspect of presenting. Fahy then shows how this difficulty can be overcome. I found two of the chapters, "Manage all interruptions" and "Master the Q&A", to be particularly useful as "How to's" explaining how to expertly manage a range of situations.
