This product went on well and had very good directions. After 4 coats, the table was better than it looked new! But it has scratched very easily despite my following the sanding directions perfectly. And when my husband put a clean pot of cold water on the table, well, it was covered, but the bottom must have had some condensation, it seeped all the way into the wood around the perimeter of the pot. Now, the pot was there for 48 hours due to an incoming huricane, and I'm sure that would not have happened in a smaller time. But once I can get my sander back from my sister, I plan on putting a coat or two of the oil (?) based polyurethane for extra measure. For any other table top, it would be fantastic! We just tend to abuse the kitchen table more than anything else.

BTW, I am not Michael E. Parker, Jr. That is my son. This review came from Norene Parker.

I had recently gotten fed up with oil based stains and varnishes due to their strong smell and horrible cleanup, so I decided to make a switch to water-based stuff. I use stains/varnishes primarily for small wood plaques (used for my artwork) so keep that in mind for this review. I bought Rustoleum's Water-based Red Mahogany Wood Stain and was quite pleased with it! It went on great and dried quickly! Then I decided to try Rustoleum's Varathane Water-based Polyurethane to go with it. That ended up being a complete disaster. It went on poorly, setting so quickly even on the very small wood plaques that I was using that it turned into a big gloopy mess when I tried to even out the brush strokes. I tried several different techniques to get it to work (check out my review of it if you really want to know how that worked out) but nothing really made it feel satisfactory to me. After getting very annoyed with it, I decided to try out Minwax's Water Based Oil Modified Polyurethane.

I'd heard that Water-based Oil Modified Polyurethanes were essentially hybrids between water-based and oil-based finishes, and that they had the benefits of both. This is definitely true! It still has low odor and low toxicity, dries quickly, and it cleans up very easily with soap and water. Even better, it went on much more smoothly than the pure water-based stuff I had tried before, and it leveled out nicely as it dried. It even has a nice amber tint to it that many people miss when they switch to clear water-based polyurethanes. Of course, if you specifically want something that doesn't have that amber tint, you'll probably need to try a different brand or go with a pure water-based one (preferably a brand that works better than Rustoleum's product).

Not a very good product. Fails to level and it sets up too quick. Sad, because water-based polyurethane is the only type of brush-on polyurethane Minwax is allowed to sell in California. I've had to switch brands after decades of using Minwax.

Supposed to be clear and was yellow. Was put over white and then had to paint white once again and used Varathane Polyurethane that was perfect.

Awful. The price of the stuff, the price of white paint, the price of the Varathane. The time put in. Do not use if going to apply over white or probably pastel.

This product was virtually odorless but it was not good at leveling. I stirred, didn't shake, as per the directions, and I tried both a foam brush and a high quality synthetic brush. It seems that the product starts to set so quickly it was almost impossible to get it to look completely smooth without evidence of brush marks.
