I am a woodworker and have been using minwax stains and polyurethane for over 10 years now. Recently I gave this wipe-on poly a try and absolutely loved it. It is easy to put on, and because the coats are thin they dry faster. I have used it on several projects now and will only switch back to the regular stuff for furniture that will receive a lot of abuse - such as a dining table. Compared to brushing on traditional polyurethane, it is easier to get a blemish free finish with this product. I highly recommend it!

I posted the picture of an oak clothes hamper which I stained green and finished with MinWax products. This was my second attempt with these MinWax products and I'm glad that I used them. The Wipe-On Poly seemed too good to be true. Years ago I tried to finish things with petroleum based polyurethane products and was always disappointed with streaks from brush marks. The strong smell wasn't an asset either.

If you're new to stains and finishing search the Internet for the subject, there's also a lot posted about this product. The gloss Wipe-On Ploy does not supply a mirror-like finish of a professionally done high-gloss polyurethane finish. This is actually one of the things I like about it. The wood grain is clearly visible and I like that look. It provides a glossy finish but retains the organic qualities of the wood.

Like others that have posted on the Interent, it is best to give this three or more coats to truly provide a good finish. It not difficult and it does look great. One thing that I learned: don't attempt to lay down a heavy layer of this stuff. You'll end up with "blotches" in the finish. Wipe on an even coat that's not real heavy. It dries quickly and will be ready for rubbing and then another coat. Give it the drying time suggested on the label. I hope your project looks as good or better than mine.

This finish is applied with a rag and is self-leveling. It looks like it was sprayed on and buffed. I no longer apply clear finish with a brush.

I am far from being a professional woodworker, but Minwax Wipe-On makes me look like a pro. I used Minwax regular finish products, as well as other brands, and my finishes magnify my faults and look irregular and streaked. I tried Wipe-On for the first time and loved it. The directions say to apply with a cloth, however I applied with a brush and wiped with a cloth and found the process very fast. The product is not tacky to the cloth like one would expect with any finish product but soaks in like on oil and wipes even and smooth. I used the satin finish and applied one coat, as I was refinishing an antique rocker and wanted it to look period. If you are working with perfect wood and want a new looking high gloss, use the gloss version of this product and apply more than one coat. The coats go on quickly and drying is relatively fast.

I love this stuff - I think this is the easiest finish I have ever used. I was introduced to it from an old issue of Fine Woodworking magazine (Aug. 2005) where it received the highest rating of the WIPE ON finishes tested (best value and best overall). I was especially interested in the fact that it was graded as "excellent" in their water resistance test (meaning that it resisted rings left by things like coke cans). It has everything I wanted in a finish - applies quickly and easily (with a rag), sands easily, has no runs or brush marks, dries quickly so there are fewer dust specks, cleanup is easy (throw the rag out and clean up any spills with mineral spirits); there is not a lot of smell when applying it, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. It isn't as dull looking as Watco Oil (my previous wipe on finish choice) so it gives a richer look to the wood grain. I am planning on using this A LOT in the future.

This is just what I was looking for and I wish I had known about this product earlier. Granted, I wouldn't call myself a wood finishing expert, but I worked quite a bit with wood over the last 30-something years. When I was trying to finish a wood project that involved a part where the wood was under much manual use, I originally decided to chose a shellac finish. However, even after letting the shellac cure for 30+ days - this is after much disappointment from 1 week curing - and then seeing fingerprints after touching the shellac, I knew that shellac is not the right choice for this application. I read that there is a more hardened option for shellac, but that one has to mix a batch up to use it.
Well, my next choice was this fantastic wipe-on Minwax product. And it works! Just what I was looking for. A very easy to apply liquid that leaves no marks and can be applied over and over again to smoothen out rough surfaces. I am very impressed with this product as it hardens within a day or two and the surface feels very nice to the touch - you feel the wood, not the finish. Whenever the application is the right one, I will use this kind of wood finish - for sure!

I love wipe on poly in satin, I cut a small piece of T-shirt material 3" x 3" soak it and smear it all over the project, let it dry and then use oooo steel wool and scuff the whole project and any imperfections. Coat the next day, and steel wool again, and coat again. I always finish with superfine steel wool then wax and it gives antiques a great surface that looks old!!
I can't get it in Calif. anymore due to the AQMD.... but I can still buy it on line!!
