The Mio Petite Select Heart Rate Monitor has been so much fun for me! I was looking for a strapless heart rate monitor watch, and was so pleased to find this one at such a great price, especially considering the free shipping. I didn't have any real interest in the calorie tracking portion of it, but have found that now I count my calories almost every day because it is so easy to do with this watch. It helps you decide how many calories to set as your daily goal, and as you eat throughout the day, you plug the info in to the watch and it keeps the tally. An alarm goes off when you exceed your caloric limit. Of course it's easy to sneak some snacks in here and there without telling the watch :). Also, if you check your heart rate during exercise, you it calculates how many calories you burn when it is set in chrono mode. You have the option of subtracting the calories you burn from your daily calorie tally. The other day I exercised before I ate breakfast and subtracted the calories burned -- it was very inspiring to see a negative under "calories in." Also, I would recommend getting the book "The Doctor's Pocket Calorie Fat & Carb Counter." It has been very helpful to use in conjunction with this watch. It is 4.5 inches by 6 inches and about 3/4 inch thick so I can carry it easily in my purse. It has almost every chain restaurant's calorie info and almost every food product info as well. It has been a real eye-opener for me, and has helped me make better choices in eating. I have lost several pounds already using this method.

My only complaint about this monitor is sometimes it has a hard time calculating your heart rate if your fingers are cold at the beginning of your workout, or if you have your hand above the level of the heart. There are so many positives about this product, though, and I would rather deal with these negatives than wearing an uncomfortable heart rate monitor strap around my chest.

I hope you purchase and enjoy it, too!

P.S. - There are many other options for replacement watch straps if you're not into the light blue and dark gray combo. I have found a nice solid color gray/silver one online.

The main reason I purchased this watch was to have something to monitor my heart rate while I exercised, without bothering with a chest strap. This watch definitely lets me do that, although I occasionally have to try repeatedly before getting a reading.

However, most of the extra features are far too awkward and time consuming to be worth using for me -- the modes for tracking calories consumed and burned just take more effort than they are worth for my lifestyle.

And even though this is the 'petite' model, it was simply too bulky to feel comfortable on my wrist.

That said, it is by far the most convenient way I've found of monitoring my heart rate while exercising, and so I'm glad to have it. If I was going to purchase one of these again, though, I'd probably go for one of the simpler, less expensive models.

2.0 out of 5 stars Works fine, if you're sitting still., May 5, 2006
This review is from: Mio Shape Select Petite Heart Rate Watch (Sports)
I bought this watch to replace the HR monitor I use currently, which needs a strap around my chest that I hate and wish I didn't have to use. This one is strapless but what the description doesn't indicate is that you have to press and hold buttons on the watch with two fingers for a number of seconds for it to register a heart rate. In other words, it doesn't continuously record your heart rate, but rather collects "samples" whenever you press on the buttons, and then averages those samples, which, depending on your dilligence and ability to use one or no hands during your workout, may or may not give you a realistic picture of your cardio efforts overall.

Well, I'm a runner, and using the watch during my workout proved that its nearly useless. While I can easily run and press two fingers to my wrist simultaneously, the watch could not seem to register my heart rate unless I was standing still and had my wrist held at a specific angle. This was incredibly disruptive to my workout, and when all was said and done, I was only able to record three heart rates. Of those, the average computed was far below what my older monitor reports to me. I've returned the watch, and I'll stick with the chest strap.

1.0 out of 5 stars Huge Disappointment, March 31, 2006

Sadly, I was suckered into buying a Mio Watch (including the Shape Select Petite) three different times. I had to purchase three because the first two broke and the third one finally broke last week. None of them lasted more than 4 months. And for the rather high price, 4 months is an extrememly short amount of time.

While they worked I genuinely enjoyed the product, however their inability to last indicates that the product is not a good one. After happening once, I was willing to give them another try. But after three times, I'm done with all Mio watches.

I contacted the company directly about this problem and they never responded. Overall I am very disappointed with Mio watches and the company overall.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mio Shape Select Petite Heart Rate Watch (Sports)
I discovered the Mio Shape Select HRM after looking at the Polar HRM's endorsed by my gym. The Polar looked cool, until I started really reading product specs and learned about the transmitter strap you have to wear on your chest. I had just about decided not to bother with an HRM if I was going to have to deal with a strap. Then I found the MIO products on Amazon.

The watch (the Shape Select Petite) is kind of bulky, but it does accurately read my heart rate. The advanced calorie functions are nice too, and not too difficult to use after you learn what buttons to push. However, I think that I will probably just be using this for workouts only since this watch is a little too sporty looking to go with business clothes. I do think I could have gotten away with one of the less-expensive models for the purpose of workout info only. Nonetheless, I do like this watch and am glad I bought this instead of spending even more money on a watch that requires the transmitter strap, etc. I would recommend this or perhaps the Mio Sport Select which is slightly cheaper and has a more bare-bones feature set to people who are new to working out and want to monitor their heart rate and calorie expenditures more closely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great heart rate monitor, November 29, 2006

I've had this for almost a year, and I love it. I don't use the calorie tracking feature because I think it's kind of a pain (I write down my calories manually). But, I love the heartrate monitor and the way it tracks how many calories you've burned during your workout. On the days I'm not so motivated, I make myself keep going until I've burned a certain number of calories. A great motivator, and a visual testament to how hard you've worked out!

I just got my Mio Petite. I have very tiny wrist, and I tried Timex Irom Man Heart Rate Monitor before, but it was way too big and the chest band was not comfortable for a pregnant woman. Mio Petite fits just fine on my wrist, and it can even go smaller - great for juniors. I am so thrilled about this I had to write a review!
It reads heart rate in couple of seconds. Highly recommended item for small wrist gals.

4.0 out of 5 stars Convenient without that lousy chest strap, February 23, 2006
This review is from: Mio Shape Select Petite Heart Rate Watch (Sports)
I've had my Mio for about a month now and overall I'm pleased. It's easy to use, I recommend reading the instructions, and it's nice to check out my heart rate other than using the cardio machines at the gym that probably aren't calibrated correctly. You can keep track of calories in and out which I'm finding helpful. The only problem I have is that being perfectly still ensures the fastest readout of your heart rate.

3.0 out of 5 stars Baseline Workout Tracker, February 23, 2007

I was disappointed to find out that while the heart rate monitor doesn't require a telemetry strap, it doesn't "monitor" your heart rate. You have to take your pulse by holding down two buttons. Also, it almost never can get a read on my heart rate, if I try to take it while running. I guess I move too much for it to register. However, this is better than nothing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Heart Rate Monitor...comfort??, June 7, 2007
This review is from: Mio Shape Select Petite Heart Rate Watch (Sports)
I recently purchased the Petite mio heart rate monitor. It was supposed to be "Petite" there really isn't anything petite about it. The band is only slightly shorter than my old polar heart rate monitor and it's uncomfortable to wear because of its size. The functioning of it measures up to my expectations and beyond. It is very accurate. I've tested it against several exercise machines at my physical therapist gym and it has been right on. I would be rating it a five++ if it were truly a petite watch. If you are looking just for the function of a heart rate monitor than this may be what you want. It's convient. No chest strap to wear. Responds in about 5 seconds after having been used a bit and it's accurate. The other features are nice but I don't often use them. The alarm isn't loud enough to even hear it go off. My students don't even hear it if I've left it on during class.
