4.0 out of 5 stars Good but you should know
I have read the other reviews for several Mio strapless heart rate watches and I have basicly the same experience and positive review. Very good product but your body must be still to get your heart rate and wait about 6 seconds (this is why only 4 stars rating). It reads out the HR and the percent of max. 2.0 out of 5 stars Great heart rate monitor - as long as you aren't working out
I did a fair amount of research before purchasing this heart rate monitor. I wanted a monitor without the chest strap, and of the available options, the Mio appeared to be the highest rated and best value.

The watch fits me ok. The solid pink strap was to big for my wrist, so I use the smaller black and pink strap. I consider myself to be of "medium"...

I have read the other reviews for several Mio strapless heart rate watches and I have basicly the same experience and positive review. Very good product but your body must be still to get your heart rate and wait about 6 seconds (this is why only 4 stars rating). It reads out the HR and the percent of max. However, it won't display anywhere what your personal max rate it is using. You most do some math yourself to find what number the Mio is using. I want to know because I know what target I should be using for my circumstances. Your max HR is different for land based x, shallow water x, and deep water x. I do all three forms of exercise. For some you maybe interested to know the second black/pink band that comes with the package is smaller and fits only the smallest of wrists.

I consider myself to be of "medium" build, my wrist mesures 6.5 inches on the spot where I wear the watch, and it fits with a few notches to spare. The monitor itself is very large (to be expected) and does not sit flush against my wrist, leaving gaps on the top and bottom. While this isn't exactly fashionable, it is not uncomfortable.

The heart rate monitor is very easy to use if I am still and dry. It appears to be rather accurate, and is very close to the reading on the gym cardio machines. Once I get into my workout and start to sweat, it becomes increasingly difficult to get a reading. I have to stop, take the watch off, dry it, and stand still to measure my heart rate. Even then, it is not very consistent, and often gives a "half reading". By the time I have gotten a reading, I am sure my heart rate has dropped significantly, and I have to get back into my workout high again. It can be frustrating if you are trying to keep your heart rate within a certain level. I consider my workouts to be on the more intense side, so it is possible this would suit lighter workouts just fine.

The only additional function I utilize is the workout timer, which also tracks the amount of calories burned. The timer, while very useful, appears to be 2-3 seconds faster than the gym cardio machines (and this holds true with all machines I have tried). The burned-calorie tracker, which works automatically when you start the cardio timer, is always significantly lower than the cardio machine's tracker. I'm not sure which one is more accurate, but after an hour, there is usually a 100 calorie difference.

All in all, this watch has been disappointing. As much as I do not want to wear a chest strap, it looks like that is really the only option if you want an accurate reading all the time. I would recommend this for someone looking to track the heart rate throughout the day or during very mild exercise, but that's about it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with the strap, June 24, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: MioPINK Classic Heart Rate Monitor Watch with Two Straps (Sports)
I purchased this item primarily for the pink and black strap (as opposed to the other colors available for this item from Amazon). I had read the reviews that said the strap was for small wrists, which I have, but, the strap is SO SMALL that only a child or a teen could comfortably wear it. (And I don't know of any children or teens who care enough about their heart rate to spend $50 on *this* watch.) I can't imagine what the mfr was thinking. The watch itself is okay. The heart rate monitor is super easy to use, but the set up and entry buttons are a little awkward -- it's much easier to do it if you're not wearing the watch, which, if you're using the calorie counter throughout the day, is a pain.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not suitable for exercise, April 24, 2009
This review is from: MioPINK Classic Heart Rate Monitor Watch with Two Straps (Sports)
I bought this watch because a tennis opponent raved about it. I was incredibly disappointed, however, because I found it to be impossible to monitor my heartrate during my treadmill workouts. The instruction booklet advises you to check your heartrate anytime you increase or decrease the intensity of your workout for maximum accuracy of calories burned, but my heartrate simply would not measure while I was running. What a waste! I feel like I have an overpriced stopwatch, instead of an accurate heartrate monitor. Also, please do not purchase this product from Watchgems through Amazon. I made that mistake and then tried to return the product one week after I bought it because it was not suitable for my needs, and they refused to accept it, and then sent me two nasty emails explaining why they would not accept it. The company is very unprofessional and difficult to work with, and I strongly advise against purchasing this product from them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this product!, May 29, 2008

I wanted a watch that could count calories and keep tract of how many calories I was burning in a workout. This watch does just that. It is very easy to use and unlike other reviews I have seen.....this watch DOES let you enter as many meals as you have, it doesnt limit you to 3 imputs of calories per day. You do have to reset the calories each day but that is super easy. The other thing I like about the watch is that it comes with a book that recommends how many calories you should be eating to loose weight but it is totally up to you as to what you put your calorie intake into the watch. The last thing I thought was cool is that you get this mini book you can keep with you that has a ton of common foods listed and what their calories are, its a great quick reference tool and its small!

I was hoping for it to be just a tiny bit better. It was great for treadmill run or personal work outs. With a little practice it bacame pretty easy to get a heart rate and I think it is pretty close. And it was easy to figure out the programs. But when I was actually running on the street and trying to watch the road and keep up a good speed, I found it to be impossible to get a reading. If I slowed down I could get it, but slowing down is not what you want to do if you are trying to maintain a good speed. I tried several times and it just would not give me a reading no matter if I tried for a few seconds or 15 seconds. For a runner who changes speeds, this may not be the right item, but for the light work out or treadmill, I think it would do nicely.

5.0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE if you are serious about results, December 5, 2008

This review is from: MioPINK Classic Heart Rate Monitor Watch with Two Straps (Sports)
As a personal trainer for the last 10 years, I have been on the hunt for a great heartrate monitor that I can use with my clients. I tried the monitors with the additional straps and it was always a hassle trying to get the strap to be comfortable and getting a quick reading. The wait is finally over. I HAVE FOUND THE PERFECT WATCH. The Mio gives a quick read of not only the exact BPM but at the same time the percentage of max. heart rate. It is so easy to ask my clients "just watch that you stay at you 70% max heartrate" and all they do is keep an eye on that number to pop up when they take a reading. So easy, so accurate and so accesible to all body types. No worries that the strap wont get around my larger clients. Now my clients are motivated to monitor the heartrate and can get their results faster with accurate readings. It's also a great tool for calculating calories burned and has the usual watch features you would expect in a quality digital time piece. I like the light which remains on long enough and is bright enough for the darkness of the spinning class. I love this watch, wear it everyday and tell all my clients to buy it too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Could be better, July 10, 2008
This review is from: MioPINK Classic Heart Rate Monitor Watch with Two Straps (Sports)
I got this watch because I like the look of it and it got good reviews. I primarily needed a heart monitor and all the reviews said that it worked well but is a little big. I like the design of it, but the heart monitor is very impractical. I have to hold my fingers on the monitor to get a reading and half the time I never even get one. It is so frustrating to hold the button down for 30 seconds and never get a reading. I am a runner and wanted to know my heart rate during runs, but there is no practical way to get a reading while running and even when I come to a dead stop and try to get a reading it will not take one until my heart rate has slowed way down. It completely defeats the purpose. I've attempted to use this watch for over a month and I haven't gotten an accurate reading yet if my heart rate is above 160. It is also very difficult to go from the stopwatch timer to looking at what time it is. You have to take your heart rate and then press mode, which wouldn't be so bad if the heart rate monitor actually worked! I think I am going to sell it because it isn't worth the trouble. If you are doing very light exercise and have all day to wait to find out your heart rate or if you just want to know how many calories you are burning then this watch is for you. Otherwise, don't waste your money.

I was looking for a heart rate monitor that didn't have a chest strap and was so glad to find this one. It is a bit larger than a normal watch, but that's because it doesn't need a chest strap. It also doesn't give you a constant reading of your heart rate and therefore calories burned are only an estimate based on the time elaspsed and your current heart rate. I find that it's still acurate and helps me to keep my heart rate in the target range and giving me a good picture of how many calories I've burned. Besides - it's pink and supports breast cancer research!
