Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Miracle Cures: Dramatic New Scientific Discoveries Revealing the Healing Powers of Herbs, Vitamins, and Other Natural Remedies (Hardcover)
The basic concept of the book is that there are herbal and dietary ways to alleviate or cure many of today's medical afflictions; that the many modern medications (and their associated side affects) may not be only path to relief. The author does a wonderful job of presenting the case for 21 such remedies in a reasonably scientific manner, with a minimum of sensationalism (yes, there is some, how can you avoid it in this genre, the book is called Miracle Cures after all).
Let me say upfront, I am a skeptic. I firmly believe in the adage - if it seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is not. However, Jean Carper, presents each remedy or supplement in such a straight forward manner that the claims seem reasonable, and for the cost of a few supplements, you have to ask yourself - Why not? Each chapter covers one remedy, with sections on - what it is, how it works, supporting evidence (in the form of tests and trials), who should take it, how much to take, and consumer concerns (good brands so you don't get burned by buying bogus stuff). I found the latter helpful in searching out certain of the harder to find supplements, although many of the supplements are available in Standardized varieties now, so it may be less vital information than it was in 1997. Does any of the stuff work? I do not know at this time. I have been convinced enough to put up a few dollars to try some of them though. My wife has moderately elevated cholesterol, so we are giving the grapefruit fiber a shot. We have all been a little moody lately (lots of stress), so we are giving the fish oil (Omega-3) a try. If these seem to work, I may try a few of the others. My only complaint is that the book has a 1997 copyright, and could really use an update. P-) [Update May 28, 2005] Don't know on the cholesterol, my wife goes back in in 4 months for a check, however, our mix of suppliments right now includes - ginko biloba, grapefruit fiber, grapeseed extract, Omega-3 fish oils, coenzyme Q10, and a multiple vitamin plus minerals. The result is that we are both feeling an otherwise unexplained surplus of energy and we are less moody and more positive in our attitudes. [Update Sept 5,2005] Okay, on the cholesterol, turns out I was over 260 last year when I had it checked (just didn't know). When I went in for a check this August I was down to 191, so while I cannot say 100% that the grapefruit fiber is responsible, there is a strong correlation.

Great Reference Book,

This review is from: Miracle Cures: Dramatic New Scientific Discoveries Revealing the Healing Powers of Herbs, Vitamins, and Other Natural Remedies (Hardcover)
I will highly recommend this book to anyone looking for natural ways to control certain conditions that may be cuased mainly by lifestyle. Like cholesterol in some people, heart disease, etc... And if you can't affort a good naturopath, this book gives good advice... Because I know naturopath's can be very expensive, even in thou in my opinion they are worth the money, but not everyone has the cash...
My mother had her cholesterol at 210... After 3 months of taking Fish Oil, Garlic, Pro Fibe (A powder of fiber) and a greens drink, her cholesterol went down to 139!!! I know amazing... And she lost 10 pounds and felt better than ever. She takes her calcium liquid with magnesium and she loves it also. With me my trigecerides and my heart were very high. My risk of heart attacks was extremely high. And after 3 months of taking Niacin (that's a B Vitamin), taking Fish Oils, and the greens drink, my triglecerides went down to like the 70's... And my risk for heart attacks went down 100%... This book gives you a good starting point, if you will, for certain conditions. I hope this review helped you and good luck!

You just can't go wrong with Ms. Carper's books. This one is a must have. It gets right to the point in plain, clear language. Mine has certainly been used very often. Jean's wisdom was key in my switching multivitamin products (to WIN-Daily). Click on Jean Carper's name at the top of this page under the book title to see her other works. This book is a steal at the Amazon price!

Miracle Cures worked for me!!!,

After suffering the pain of bursitis and limited motion in my shoulder for more than a year, after receiving three steroid injections, after months of non-beneficial stretching therapy, I had almost begun to accept that I'd lost the full use of my right arm. Then, I saw a current book titled "Miracle Cures". With a title like that, of course I was immediately skeptical and passed it by. But something told me to go back to that book. I did and found inside a few sentences about bursitis. In so many words it said for bursitis, a nutrient named "glucosamine sulfate" is an effective treatment. I stood there and wrote the name and went directly to the health food store. I purchased glucosamine sulfate 500mg in a 30 capsule bottle for about seven bucks. The brand was Synergy Plus but that's probably not important. Anyway, after taking the nutrient one capsule per day for seven days I was suddenly relieved. I noticed at first that I could extend my right arm and felt no pain. Then, I hurriedly thrust that same arm into the air straight up above my head and was elated to find it would extend full length, matching the full length of my left arm. I have since felt no pain and enjoy full range of motion. Miracle Cures worked for me!

I use this guide regularly as a starting point to herbal therapies and treatments. It relies on a lot of latest research both at home and overseas to put forward ideas on how these treatments can help one overcome illness. Absolutley necessary for anyone coping with chronic illness.

I was already taking alot of the products that Jean Carper talks about in her book. I had just begun taking glucosamine sulfate but I was only taking one pill. I had a problem with a tendon in my arm and had just about resolved myself to the fact that I was probably going to have to get a steroid shot. After reading her book I began taking the right dosage for glucosamine, loading up with it, and I am feeling my tendon alot less each day. This book saved me from a steroid shot that makes me ill for days. I am so thankful for that. I also began taking the ProFibe that she recommended. If it works like she says it does, and I'm sure it does, my heart will be ticking for a long time with no problems. Her book was a joy to read. It not only informed but did it in an entertaining way. I learned so much about the proper dosages to take, why I should be taking certain things and what side effects I could have. I hope she keeps writing books because I will continue to read them. I am in the process of ordering her other books because I know they will be just as informative. So thank you Jean Carper for writing about alternative medicines that we can use in our everday life. I will be looking forward to your next best seller!!!!!!

Excellent! Research info that Everyone can understand,

This review is from: Miracle Cures: Dramatic New Scientific Discoveries Revealing the Healing Powers of Herbs, Vitamins, and Other Natural Remedies (Hardcover)
I own an Herb Shop in West Chicago, Illinois. Finally, someone has come out with information that the average person can understand. I tell my customers to read this book, so they will get reliable information about natural food supplements and herbs. There is such a fear out there, still, about these products and there shouldn't be. Herbs, vitamins and minerals, etc. are FOOD, not drugs. People should be as leary about the drugs their doctors prescribe for them as they are about herbs, etc. Hopefully this book will be read by Millions of AMERICANS and they can lay their fears to rest.

WAY too limited in scope,

This review is from: Miracle Cures: Dramatic New Scientific Discoveries Revealing the Healing Powers of Herbs, Vitamins, and Other Natural Remedies (Paperback)
This book is good but it is extremely limited in scope. Should be at least four times the length (which could easily be done with smaller type and better design). This book covers very, VERY few herbs, vitamins, and minerals. It could be a good-sized pamphlet instead of a hardbound book.

A bona-fide life-saver! Jean Carper, you've done it again!,
This review is from: Miracle Cures: Dramatic New Scientific Discoveries Revealing the Healing Powers of Herbs, Vitamins, and Other Natural Remedies (Paperback)
This book is an excellent tool in combating some of the major and minor health problems which man is prone to. I am excited about the revelation of Kudzu to curb the craving for booze, which I am afflicted to. I also suffer from gout, which is a misery to a former distance runner, and now maybe I can get back on the road. Buyers can be sure that they will get their money's worth many times over if they buy, read, and heed this important health book.
