This review is from: Miracle in the Evening: An Autobiography (Hardcover)
This is one of the most inspirational books I have ever read. Norman Bel Geddes is an incredible writer and a modest, but highly successful man. It is a mystery why this man, with such a prolific influence on the modern American lifestyle, is so unknown.
An autobiography, published posthumously, recounts the life of a national design legend as he experiences the rises and falls of his creative career. This book puts a face to famous creative people whom impacted Geddes' life, such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Enrico Caruso, and can be seen as a beautifully written history lesson. It is not uncommon that I find myself researching the many people described in this book after the chapter in which I read about them. It is often said that people have an incredible ability to detect sincerity out of original pieces of art; because of this Geddes has an uncanny ability to derive an emotional response in the reader out of the simplest of actions. Perhaps one of the most underrated of highly influential Americans, Geddes' life is truly inspirational. |
