This is a fabulous, easy to use product that results in large, healthy flowers. I tried the liquid form and was not nearly as pleased with it because it was much more work to walk around my large yard with the hose and that bulky spray device. With the Shake and Feed, just sprinkle some around everything you want to feed and turn on the water. Of course you must be careful not to over-fertilize plants that might be planted in an already fertilized soil. That's just common sense.

I've used the Miracle-Gro 'blue' powder all purpose fertilizer that you mix with water for over 40 years and it works beautifully. So I thought I'd give this time-release product a try. It is similar to other time-release fertilizer pellets. It contains the expected 10-10-10 fertilizer balance. However, when you look below that on the label you will see that it *also* contains 20% Sulfur (!). Sulfur is what you use to increase the acidity of soil. If you live in an area where the soil is already highly acidic (has pH value of 5 or lower) then you do *not* want to use this stuff as it will increase the acidity of your soil to a very unhealthy level for most plants.

I called the Miracle-Gro phone number on the label and confirmed this. They told me this product should "only be used with soil that has a neutral pH" -- even though there is no mention of this caution on the label and the label clearly says "All Purpose".

I've never seen any other Miracle-Gro fertilizer that had added sulfur to it, much less a whopping 20%. I Don't really understand why they would do this, since 20% sulfur would rapidly increase the acidity of even neutral pH soil fairly quickly. It's too bad, I would have liked to use these time-release pellets to save work.

I started buying time release fertilizers after reading a tip on a gardening forum. I had just planted 43 young Emerald Arborvitae, which I hoped would grow into a hedge wall along my property line with an apartment house. Every November and February, I go down the line with a large-hole shaker, spreading these slow-release pellets around the base of each Arborvitae. The late fall application is after they have stopped growing for the year (so I don't start new growth that will soon be frozen and killed). However, some of the fertilizer will break down over the winter, and help the roots. The February application is before the spring growing season begins, so the time release fertilizer is starting to reach the roots as my Arborvitae come out of their winter dormancy. My result so far is a thick 100% hedge wall up to about 10 feet, and Arborvitae branches with some gaps up to about 16 feet. I'll have the 2nd floor of the apartment house completely blocked from view within the next 4 years. There is no way my city would have ever approved a 10' high fence, much less a 20' high one, so these Arborvitae have been a god-send for me.
People keep telling me I'm so lucky to have had none of my Arborvitae fail after over 10 years. Slow release fertilizer and regular watering are my only "tricks". I've used Osmocote and several other time release fertilizers. They all seem to work about the same. The key is the time release, so the plants aren't "burned" by too much fertilizer, or left with nothing all season. Beyond that, go for a fertilizer meant for your type of plants, and follow the instructions for about how many pellets per square foot there should be after application. It's really that simple with a time release fertilizer.

I bought this only after doing a ridiculous amount of research to find out the N-P-K ratio, which should have been in the description. This is very important as it can vary greatly and different plants can need different amounts. Eventually I found this was 10-10-10, which is good for most potted plants, the market for this product. The formula can change on these fertilizers - the liquid Miracle Grow has changed from the old 10-10-10 to a really high nitrogen ratio, which makes people happy because they get lots of green growth, but can be too much for many plants to flower or set fruit. Buying without checking the label before each purchase can give you results you don't like.

I read research that tomatoes grown in this company's moisture control potting soil all got blossom end rot. Blossom end rot is usually caused by improper watering keeping the soil calcium from being taken up into the plant. Unlike the other potting mixes this one had no calcium in it and, unless calcium was added to the soil by fertilizing or some other means (gypsum is a good source), the tomatoes all were damaged.

Because of this I looked again at the back of the label to see if there was any calcium in the fertilizer. I was surprised to find that in addition to 10% nitrogen, 10% phosphorous and 10% potassium that the numbers on the front of the bag shows, it also contains 20% sulfur. Sulfur is used to lower the pH of soil. I don't know why this would contain sulfur unless they are trying to lower the pH of soil-less mixes heavy on sphagnum moss, which would naturally be already low pH.

This is fine for the baskets of annual flowers I used it in, but given the sulfur I would not use it in houseplants or something I wanted to keep alive more than a few months.
