This really helped keep my potted plants looking great . . . even during the hottest part of the summer.

This works and crystals get quite large when the pot is well watered.

I use this for two things. First I use it for what it's intended for which is to help retain water for plants. I have added this to pots and my garden this year and I truly feel it's helped lower my watering needs. I garden using raised garden beds and here in Austin, Texas which this year has already had more than 27 days of over 100 degree weather. Raised gardens are convenient to build but they dry out faster than traditional beds. Usually by this time of year my tomato plants are long gone or whatever they are producing is suffering due to irregular watering. This year my tomato plants are looking good, I'm only watering every two days but my tomatoes are not suffering and tomato production is still good.

The second thing I use this for is to create neck wraps. I create the neck wraps out of bandanas and just a little bit of this product absorbs probably 10 times it's size. Wet the neck wrap, stick it in the fridge and wear them during hot days. The Miracle-Gro Water Storing Crystals, absorbs the cold water and helps you stay cool on hot days.

I am hugely impressed with this product. I sprinkled just a smidge into a bag of potting soil (you can put directly onto soil, too), potted some pansies and in less than two months (it is now the end of April), they are DOUBLE the size that they achieve by the end of the season, AND I've only watered twice in 8 weeks. When soaked, the crystals puff up to 10-20 times their size and slowly release their water weight stored in the crystals, keeping plants incredibly well-hydrated. Sprinkle away and be AMAZED. I know I'm sounding over the top but I've never seen anything like this -- my plants are thriving, and I'm not watering a fraction of the time.

I purchased these water storing crystals to go into neck cozies for keeping cool in the summer. Basically, I took a 18"x9" scrap of fabric, sewed the ends leaving a pouch and then put these crystals inside and sewed it up. If you do this, bear in mind that 1/4 teaspoon expands about 7x's its size when wet, so don't overfill your pouch!

After I filled my neck cozy (with about 1 1/4 tablespoons worth), I soaked them in ice water for about an hour. The crystals become balls of non-toxic gel. Virtually no water drips from this neck cooler and as the water evaporates from the water storing crystals, it just shrinks down in size and is ready to repeat the process. Not sure how many times this will work, but since this is the same product used in hot and cold compresses sold in stores that are reusable, I'd assume 'many times'.

Another craft idea is to soak these in a combo of scented oil and water. You'll be left with scented beads, which as the water evaporates, give off whatever scent you added to the water. A DIY air freshener.

Then there's the intended purpose, to retain water in the soil of your plants. It works great for that as well. I mixed in a teaspoon to a quart of soil for houseplants. Depending upon the climate where you live, you may end up watering once a month instead of once a week. It's great to leave on vacation and know you'll still have 'live' plants when you return.

Fun to play with and extremely useful, the package says keep out of reach of children and pets, however no mention of the product being toxic to them has been found in any literature I've read about this or similar products. This product works really great. I mixed it in the soil and noticed a difference right away. The soil didn't dry up quickly. You can see the crystals retaining the water.

I made my own little bandanas using this as a filler, just a 1 and 1/2 tsp was enough, this would make a ton of them! The bandanas are great, just cool them in some ice water for about 30 min or so, and the crystals soak up all the cold water. They last for a few hours, perfect for working in the yard on hot summer days.
I loved it so much I of course also used it for what it is made for, helping out the plants retain water outdoors, and it works great for that too... but if you are looking for what to use for bandanas, this works great!

This is my first time using these crystals. Pay attention to the recommended amount of crystals per pot size. I measured the crystals and let them set in 2 cups of water before I mixed with my potting soil. The one pot I put a little to many crystals in had to be remixed by removing some of the soil with the crystals and adding more potting soil without crystals. When it will become obvious how well the crystals work will be this coming Summer. I used the crystals because I planted fuschias and they don't like the soil to get to dry. It's currently Winter and I am not watering very often. The crystals go a long way. The recommendations from others who were not happy with the crystals for one reason or another most likely used to much of the crystals. When you do that the potting soil will overflo or will hold to much water and drown the plant.

Wow, this is a pure source of those water crystals. Before I tried to get these same crystals from taking apart diapers because I heard they use the same stuff to absorb water, but the crystals in the diapers have a sorts of fuzzy fibers mixed in. If it's good enough for a baby's butt, then it's good enough for my plants. They increase in size a lot when wet. like a little teaspoon filled at least 2 cups! Smashing up the crystals and smoking them did not achieve any haluicnating effects, I'll use them for my plants.
