We do pots and containers for a living, and use 150 to 200 of the 2 cu ft bags of potting soil per year. Last year and this year there has been a decided change for the worse in the product. We now refer to it as potting mulch, given the predominant component now seems to be wood mulch. Actually, this understates the problem, because mulch doesn't have the miscellaneous foreign substances we find in the MiracleGro product. In the last week, for example, here's a partial list: plastic pull tab from a water or iced tea container; 15" root of some plant, 4" piece of painted wood, a bent 4" steel nail, misc. parts of blue latex gloves.

The product quality seems to vary. Some bags are clearly better than others - even from the same pallet. The worst are heavy, smelly bags of miscellaneous forms of wood and junk. The best are still not up to past standards, and are way off the standard of the better potting soils available.

At this point, the only reason to use this product is price. Presumably, the company has made the calculation that at the end of the day, people care about price more than anything else, so they will use the cheapest materials available to get the price down, and make up for the loss of biologically useful organic material by adding in more inorganic chemicals to support their "2x as big!!" and "6 months!" claims. So potting soil has now been officially Corporatized.

We're actively looking into alternative products for next season.

Noticed small, fluid filled sacks in the soil when I was filling pots. Thought it was strange, but didn't think they might be eggs. Then the flies started coming.

I already had about 20 plants growing well with no sign of flies. Based on seeing the eggs in the soil and the timing of the onslaught of flies in the days after first using the MiracleGro, I feel safe assuming they came from that bag of soil

The "flies" were actually fungus gnats. I did some research online to determine what they were. The best way to combat them is to dry out the soil, where their eggs and larvae are, and halt the life cycle. This worked well, but the lack of water killed 90% of my plants.

If you do a search for fungus gnats and MiracleGro, you'll find many customers have fungus gnat issues with their products.

Time to start over. Won't be using MiracleGro this time.

Based on many online reviews, I know I'm not the only person having a bad experience with fungus gnats! The Scott's company website makes a million excuses about why this mix is full of wood mulch, smells like diesel fuel and is infested with fungus gnat eggs, but refuse to sterilize the product to keep your plants and home bug free! Their recommendation is to purchase sand and layer it on top of the soil to reduce the infestation instead of fixing it on their end. Within weeks of transplanting your seedlings, you will find the surface of the soil filled with small crawling insects that then develop wings and resemble fruit flies. They take over everything. They do not eat your plants, but they invade your home and are very difficult to get rid of. This has happened to me with every bag I have purchased over the last few years. I guess I keep hoping it wouldn't be EVERY bag, but I'm tired of wasting my money. Funny thing is, through all their excuses, they can't explain why other brands don't have this problem! Inferior product.

I am trying to grow vegetables and herbs on my back porch this year. I have used Miracle Gro potting soil in the past with good results, but I was feeling too lazy to drive to the home improvement store to buy it, so I ordered on Amazon.

The quality of the soil I received was excellent. There were very few large pieces and no gnats. It was easy to scoop out with a pot or a trowel and it holds moisture very well (so make sure your pots have adequate drainage and don't water your plants too often). The seedlings I transplanted into this soil are thriving thus far. My past experience with this soil has been that the fertilizers it already contains are good enough for one growing season, at least, so you don't need to add more fertilizer. Also, if you don't use it all up, it will usually last more than a year in the bag, although opened bags may dry out a bit.

I would caution you to be careful what you're ordering when it comes to package size, since there are many package sizes with many different measurement units available on this page. I had no idea what the sizes of the bags I had bought in previous years were, so I ordered what I thought was the biggest bag (2.5 cubic feet). Indeed, that is a big bag -- it had a 55-lb shipping weight per bag! And now I have three of them. The good news is that this stuff is inexpensive, lasts a long time, and I've already used half a bag and have lots of planting left to go. But if you don't have a lot of storage space, you may want to opt for a smaller size.
