On a cold, gray day not long ago, a lonely dog sat shivering on a traffic island. Cars and trucks whizzed all around, but nobody noticed her. A black-and-tan German Shepherd, she was a pretty dog even though she was starving and her ribs poked out. Her eyes were soft brown, and her pointed ears were like velvet to the touch. Sweet and gentle as she was, no one seemed to care about the dog. She was very cold and hungry and scared.
Then early one afternoon, a kindly woman got out of her car and walked up to the dog, offering her a dish of canned dog food. The womans name was Midori. "I must help that dog," Midori said. "Shes so skinny you can see her ribs. That stray hasnt eaten anything in days." Midori loved dogs and cats. She was devoted to helping pets that other people had abandoned. "Its terrible how cruel people can be to their pets," she often said. "Thousands and thousands of people just abandon their dogs and cats every year. We need to rescue as many as we can."
