introducing children to the idea of adopting a pet, February 9, 2010
This review is from: The Miracle of the Little Kitten (True Stories about Saving Animals) (Paperback)
How do you nurse a nearly dead little kitten back to health? It is summertime on the hundred-year-old farm and farmer Samuel is busy preparing for the upcoming harvest season by fixing his tractor when he hears a soft meowing. But there aren't any baby kittens on the farm. Over the next several days, he continues to hear the meowing and looks everywhere for a kitten, but nothing turns up. After four days, here comes farmer Samuel's dog Stinky Little Scroungy with a baby kitten in his mouth. The kitten is cold, stiff, and barely moving, but alive. Samuel and his wife Cheri get food and medicine to help the sick kitten, whom they name Miracle, get better. But they already have enough animals on their farm, so will they be able to find someone to adopt Miracle?
Author-illustrator Samuel Lopez and his wife Cheri have devoted their lives to helping abused, abandoned, and unwanted animals on their farm in northern California, and they established the Compassionate Pet Sanctuary. Like the other books on the "True Stories About Saving Animals," The Miracle of the Little Kitten is about one of the animals that fortunately found themselves at the sanctuary. These stories introduce children to the concept of adopting rather than buying an animal for a pet and help them learn an invaluable lesson about the joy of rescuing animals, as they chronicle the couple's life at the Compassionate Pet Sanctuary, which will benefit from the proceeds of the books.
