Review

"Ernie's is a compelling story with themes that grip your heart. His humility, faithfulness, and dedication to evangelism inspire and convict."
(David L. Stevens, M.D., Chief Executive Officer, Christian Medical & Dental Asso)

From the Back Cover

"I am proud to have known Ernie and grateful to have called him my friend.  For me he was, and always will be, a true model of Christian servanthood.  My prayer is that God will use his story to impact many more for a life of service to the King."     —from the foreword by FRANKLIN GRAHAM

“Lord, I don’t know what you want me to do. But whatever you can do with my life, here it is!”  When Indiana farm boy Ernie Steury uttered this prayer at the close of a church service in 1948, he could never have imagined how God would use him to build one of the most successful medical mission facilities in the world. This compelling biography recounts Ernie’s remarkable life and ministry as a medical missionary in Tenwek, Kenya.

Raised in America’s heartland, Ernie studied to be a medical missionary at Asbury College and Indiana University School of Medicine and then answered the call to Tenwek in 1959, where he founded Tenwek Hospital and built it into what is widely recognized as one of the premier mission hospitals in the world.

Ernie’s adventures in Kenya include pincher ants, an angry gorilla, and witch doctors. Cultural superstitions about surgery and other common medical treatments such as blood transfusions; limited human and medical resources; and facilities that, for many years, were inadequate to meet the needs of the thousands who came for help—all were obstacles Ernie overcame as he healed bodies and sought to change lives through the ministry of the gospel.

This account of exemplary faithfulness, spiritual wisdom, committed discipleship, lifelong obedience, and genuine compassion will inspire readers to follow Ernie’s example as dedicated servants of a loving God who is anxious to show the world what great things He can accomplish with an individual totally committed to Him.

“Ernie’s is a compelling story with themes that grip your heart. His humility, faithfulness, and dedication to evangelism inspire and convict.” —David L . Stevens, M .D., Chief Executive Officer, Christian Medical & Dental A ssociations

The story of Ernie and Sue Steury and the further development of Tenwek medical facility in Kenya Africa is nothing short of a look into God's hand and heart. As young Ernie Steury, gives up a Naval career, not quite knowing why and then becomes a medical missionary in Africa, God works miracle after miracle. If you are discouraged, are weary, and need to be reminded to "draw near to Jesus" this book is for you.
My heart crys out "Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord let the earth hear His voice, Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord, let the people rejoice. O, come to the Father through Jesus the Son, and give Him the glory great things he has done."

This book is an interesting, engaging biography of Ernie Steury. The author is an excellent storyteller, vividly portraying Ernie Steury's life and personality through dramatic, amazing, and funny stories. The book does cover some of his childhood and early adulthood, but mainly focuses on his work in Kenya.

Much information is included about the local culture and the problems local customs created during medical treatment, like the superstitions about death, blood, and spirits and the practices of female circumcision and infanticide. However, the living conditions at the hospital weren't as primitive as in some missionary books.

Most of the surgery scenes are not highly graphic, but the few that are might make people queasy if they get queasy watching TV surgery scenes.

The book quotes letters and articles written by Dr. Steury to show the emotional stresses and ups and downs of missionary work. It also includes quotes from family, friends, and staff. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone interested in medical missions or in rural Kenya.

The story of Dr. Ernie Steury and his family touched my heart. To see how God worked in their lives to bring them to Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya was most inspiring. He worked with so little upon arrival and God used him to bring in medical equipment and supplies, to establish a safe water supply for the hospital, to build a hydroelectric plant there, to greatly enlarge the hospital and the Tenwek campus, and to touch the lives of so many kenyas, both for better health and for spiritual well being over a 50 year period. Our son and his wife are presently working in this hospital. Having visited for three weeks in March, it was wonderful to read about all the things I had seen there. Don't miss his amazing biography.

Simply stated, this is the best story of missionary medicine I have ever read. Having spent two years in missionary medicine,in Africa, my wife and I enjoyed immensely reading the story of Ernie Steury. We had experienced a small amount of what is told in this book, and the story recalled our experiences.

As I read this book and recognized names of people I have met, I cried as I saw how God used ordinary people who were willing to give of their time and finances. For me, this was like a walk through WGM's "Hall of Fame". God is able if we are willing to step out of ourselves to do God's work - one mission trip and a time. Reach out to your neighbor, wherever you see a need.
