Book Description

January 1, 2001 9 and up4 and up
This is the dramatic story of Sempo Sugihara, Japan's Oskar Schindler. As the Japanese Counsel General in Lithuania, he had saved over 5,000 lives from the Nazis by miraculously issuing illegal exit visas. The story is told through the eyes of a young Jewish refugee whose father worked closely with Sempo Sugihara. In a world of lessons unlearned, violence, and hatred, this is the wonderful story of a selfless man with a divine passion for humanity. This book celebrates the great miracle of life itself.

This review is from: The Miracle Visas (Hardcover)
This book, though listed under "Children's Books," is a book for people of all ages (in fact, the graphic descriptions of what took place at German concentration camps are a bit too much for young children). The main character is a young Jewish boy who flees Poland and goes to Lithuania to escape from the advancing German army at the start of World War II. While in Lithuania, he encounters Chiune "Sempo" Sugihara, the Japanese consul general, who risks his life and career to save thousands of Jews by writing transit visas for them so they can leave Lithuania and go to Israel or the United States.

Sempo Sugihara was a great man, and this novel (by a Japanese author) helps the reader see him in a unique light -- through the eyes of a Jewish refugee who searches for Sugihara after the war. It details the life of Jewish refugees as they passed through Japan on their way to other countries.

I recommend this novel to anyone who is interested in Japan, the Holocaust or Sempo Sugihara.
