About the Author

Kristen Bowers is a former English teacher and the founder and President of Secondary Solutions. She has written over 15 books, including Literature Guides for Of Mice and Men, Brave New World, To Kill a Mockingbird, Julius Caesar, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and more, as well as two essay writing Guides: Essay Apprentice and Essay Architect. In 2005, Mrs. Bowers became frustrated and tired of writing her own worksheets, quizzes, tests, and activities to teach her students the required literature and the content standards on which her students were being tested at the district and state levels. At the time, resources and tools that were available for purchase were not up to her high standards of teaching, so she decided to create these materials herself.

Mrs. Bowers set to work to create one of the most comprehensive and innovative Literature Guide sets on the market. After becoming frustrated with the quality and content of teaching materials available to her when she was a new teacher in 2005, Mrs. Bowers decided to create them herself. This literature guide is a great asset to teaching the novel The Miracle Worker to 9th grade students. It offers before reading activities and summaries for each act. The answer key at the back of the guide is a life saver. I highly recommend this guide if you are planning on teaching The Miracle Worker, the story of Helen Keller.

I am so excited about this book! I just bought this from their website, and received mine yesterday. It has lessons for teaching the content standards, which I think is really cool, because most of the books our kids have to read have no decent materials related to them. I have been trying to come up with ideas for teaching the content standards, but now I can do that while I teach them the required novels and plays! I think the price is reasonable, because this is not just a book full of questions and answers like most of the books I have found. It does have comprehension questions, but it also covers things like character development, analogies, theme, etc. so I don't have to make them up myself. School starts here soon, so I am looking forward to trying this out.

I am a middle school Special Ed. teacher and this past year I taught an 8th grade Literature class and we read The Miracle Worker in May. This resource was very helpful. I didn't have time to use as much of it as I'd wanted, but I did use a number of pages from it and it was very helpful. Everything is very practical and teaches literary terms and asks a lot of good questions and has good graphic organizers. It's not just some cutesy book with nice little ideas that don't apply to the standards we're required to teach. It addresses a lot of comprehension and literary/drama items. There are also a lot of good vocabulary words to teach too.
