Miracle is, hands down, the best sports movie ever, and for my money, the best movie period! To begin with, you have the greatest moment in sports history. The Miracle on Ice has everything they write into fictional sports movies, only it actually happened. The film stays close to the actual events, closer in fact than any other "true" sports movie I have ever seen. This is owing to the fact that the Miracle on Ice needs no re-touching to make it dramatic and exciting. I have found that I want to jump up and cheer every time it hits the 10 minute mark of the third period of the game, when Eruzione scores. I know it is coming, but it still gets me going. The line "Do you believe in miracles? Yes!" gives me chills. The action is more authentic than any other sports movie due to the fact that they chose hockey players and taught them to act, rather than choosing actors and teaching them to play. A wise decision. This, coupled with a camera system invented specifically for this movie will put you right on the ice with the players. The same people and equipment went on to film Crooked Arrows, so if you have seen that, you know what I'm talking about. If you were around for the Miracle on Ice, this will remind you of the extraordinary triumph of a group of mostly unknown college hockey players. If you weren't around, you still need to treat yourself to this story.

A great movie to inspire your spirit! Really fun and smart... not a movie I would normally see but even for a non-sports fan, it was satisfying.

Kurt Russell plays a toned down version of Herb Banks but does so with such style.
Who can deny the story is inspirational.
Not only does the coach push the players to be all they can be, not just for the team but for themselves.
There are some scenes where you just want to jump into the room and hug the players.
There are other scenes where you just want to jump off the couch and go run a mile or so.

I have seen this movie before and it was even better the second time around. I was living in Lake Placid and working for the Olympic Committee at the 1980 games. It was an exciting time for the United States. This movie shows the "dream", for thousands of amateur athletes, coming true through hard work and a commitment to team work. Kurt Russell brings the coaches character, fully to the screen.

Every American student should have to watch this movie....middle school-age U.S. history class would be appropriate. It shows the true American spirit in so many ways, something we should all strive for: setting aside our differences, opening up your sights to the bigger goal, coming together as ONE to meet a challenge, and of course, hard work and perseverance can pay off. But mostly, it teaches us all that the little guy surely CAN compete against the well-established behemoth challenge. It requires guts and the strength to go the extra mile to do it.

I was fortunate enough to see this USA hockey team in reality back in 1980 and to feel what every American was feeling at the time of the USA vs. Soviet Union hockey game. I am from Minnesota, and a University of Minnesota Gopher fan. Many young men on this team came from the Gopher team and Herb Brooks was an awesome coach. So I had an additional interest in this team. I swear, the energy of every American was with the USA hockey team when they went up against the Soviet team after the devastating loss a few weeks earlier. We all realized it would be a miracle if the USA team could even keep the score close! But as USA had been moving up in the medal rounds.....we all felt like it might be possible. I recently watched the original game to compare to this movie. The last 10 minutes of that game were excruciating to watch.....I think all of America was praying for Jim Craig to keep Soviet pucks from entering his net! 10 minutes is a long time in hockey to hold a lead. As exciting as it was, the camerawork was quite boring back in those days. I am impressed with how this movie was made.....it was made for those who did not witness the original game, as well as for those of us who did.

Miracle is an inspiring story of the team that transcended its sport and united a nation with a new feeling of hope as it told the true story of the U.S. Hockey Team at the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid.

Based on the true story of one of the greatest moments in sports history, the tale captures a time and place where differences could be settled by games and a cold war could be put on ice. In 1980, the United States Ice Hockey team's coach, Herb Brooks, took a ragtag squad of college kids up against the legendary juggernaut from the Soviet Union at the Olympic Games.Nobody thinks the US Team can make it,as they are up against the previously undefeated Soviet Union hockey team. Despite the odds, Brooks leads the U.S. team to victory. As the 1980 Winter Olympics happen to coincide with the Cold War,the event is interpreted as patriotic. Despite the long odds, Team USA carried the pride of a nation yearning from a distraction from world events.

While everyone knows the expected outcome of this movie especially to those who knew about what happened at Lake Placid in 1980,the film was still effective primarily due to Kurt Russell's performance as Brooks.Aside from that, the movie did well on dwelling on the team's preparations and its character development instead of the games they played in the Olympics.Aside from Russell, special mention in the performances also goes to Eddie Cahill as Jim Craig. Overall, the movie's story is an inspirational one especially to those viewers who feel down in their lives. This film will definitely echo the feeling of what ABC broadcaster Al Michael said when the US beat the Soviets,"Do you believe in miracles? Yes!"
