5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't read the book through the tears.
OK, so I was at page 143 and I wanted to hurry and finish the book, but I realized that I couldn't read the book anymore. No, it's not too intellectual, no it's not boring; it's because I can't see through my tears!

3.0 out of 5 stars Some misgivings
I have recently seen Dr. Nemeh on TV and have been tempted to go to one of his healing services but I wanted to read this book first.

Frankly the abundance of flowery adjectives the author uses to describe everything about Dr. Nemeh and what he does were a bit of a turnoff for me.

The other thing is that there is a fee for everything about the...

OK, so I was at page 143 and I wanted to hurry and finish the book, but I realized that I couldn't read the book anymore. No, it's not too intellectual, no it's not boring; it's because I can't see through my tears!

I fought through the tears, used a box of tissues and finished the book. The book is stunning! Excellent - Maura Poston Zagrans puts so many other writers to shame. The stories of the people's healings are so very, very moving.

I think if there were a second set of sub-titles, it would be 'tears every other page and prayers every chapter' For what I found was that I was crying all the time (I was reading the book on a plane to California and the passengers next to me must have thought me weird), and the book was SO MOVING that I found myself putting the book down about every 15 pages and praying (surrendering) to God.

The author did a great, great job of describing Dr. Nemeh, his deep soul and his refreshing approach to life, and she did it while removing herself.

Maura Poston Zagrans, thanks so much for writing this great book.

Whoever reads this wonderful story will be blessed, moved and most probably changed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Nemeh--the collective memory of healing, love and compassion, June 15, 2010
By
This review is from: Miracles Every Day: The Story of One Physician's Inspiring Faith and the Healing Power of Prayer (Hardcover)
Dr. Issam Nemeh is the collective memory of healing, love and compassion in the world!

Maura Poston Zagrans tells his story, beautifully and faithfully recounting the many times she witnessed miracles. It's one humdinger of a true story happening right down the street, right in our lifetime. Dr. Nemeh and his wife, Kathy, have integrated religion and medicine into a single continuum, an electric strum of faith that resonates and runs through the story, gathering believers, healers and spirits together.

After reading her book, I am a better daughter. My father has recently-diagnosed Stage IV pancreatic cancer. He is trying every medical possibility but I now celebrate his exploration of alternative medicines and daily expressions of faith and prayer. This book helped me understand that miracles are sometimes extensions of inner strength, peace and diminished pain, not necessarily longer life here on earth.

After rereading her book, I am a better mother. Maura's explanation of neurotheology, the science of prayer, was exceptionally helpful to me. I practice empathy, love and compassion, especially with my children but I can now help my son see that he can train his brain to become less adept at feeling anger, anxiety and aggression through prayer and meditation. And a good dose of hope and humor.

Maura Poston Zagrans has delivered an exceptional book. I highly recommend space for it right at your bedside.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miracles Every Day by Maura Poston Zagrans, August 25, 2010
This review is from: Miracles Every Day: The Story of One Physician's Inspiring Faith and the Healing Power of Prayer (Hardcover)
Miracles Every Day is a chronicle of Dr. Issam Nemeh, a devout Catholic and physician, and many of the lives he touches. Dr. Nemeh is used of God for the healing of others, healings in both the spiritual realm as well as the physical realm. Dr. Nemeh's medical practice and ministry is based in Ohio where thousands gather in anticipation of a touch and a prayer from this wonderfully anointed man of God.

Maura Poston Zagrans has done an excellent job in describing Dr. Nemeh's ministry and chronicling the move of God in the lives of the people who go to Dr. Nemeh in search of healing. While reading this book, I was ushered into the presence of the Holy Spirit, and blessed with the privilege of experiencing the excitement and awe of patients who received a healing touch from God through Dr. Nemeh's ministry. I was so blessed to find confirmation within the pages of this book, confirmation for several things the Lord has taught me. This book inspired to me to take a step of faith in believing for the deeper things of God, and blessed me with a fresh revelation of the love of our Lord. The best part? The last chapter. All I can say is, wow!

Dr. Nemeh is a remarkable yet modest man. I visited him at his medical practice in Cleveland, and when I left, I was without pain for the first time in years. This was after years of chiropractic, physical therapy, etc., etc.... I had seen the videos on his website of the power of prayer before I went, but I really wish I had read this book beforehand because I would have had a better appreciation for his gifts as a healer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Prescription: Prayer, June 19, 2010

This review is from: Miracles Every Day: The Story of One Physician's Inspiring Faith and the Healing Power of Prayer (Hardcover)
Can God heal through the hands of an acupuncturist operating in the Greater Cleveland area? Well, theoretically, God can do anything, so perhaps we should ask IF God is doing such a thing. Patients of Dr. Issam Nemeh will tell you that this is exactly what the Lord is up to.

In Miracles Every Day, author Maura Poston Zagrans chronicles the story of Dr. Nemeh, an immigrant and former anesthesiologist who followed an instinctive religious calling to heal the sick with his hands. He is perhaps best known for church appearances near Cleveland that have drawn tens of thousands of participants seeking a healing. So many people show up that Dr. Nemeh has to give many of them healing rain checks, because there isn't time to tend to them all. Such stories are capably depicted in this book, but the best healing sequences in Miracles are those set in his office. Schedule an hour with the good doctor and expect to spend an intense afternoon on his table. That's where he holds prayer sessions with his patients that produce truly astounding stories. This book is full of those stories.

If you believe that prayer can heal the sick, then Miracles Every Day is a rewarding validation of your faith. If you don't, it's a useful starter kit for a gripping discussion of metaphysical issues and the value of positive thinking.

Is Dr. Nemeh really channeling the Lord's healing power to distribute miraculous healings? This book never asks that question. In fact, the book faithfully grounds its material in the affirmative presumption that Dr. Nemeh is everything he claims to be. Of course, it's natural to question the legitimacy of Dr. Nemeh's pseudo-super power, but in the context of this story, the answer to that question is made irrelevant by the staggering number of people in this book who say they got better after visiting him. One of the book's strongest assets is diligent reporting in support of its claim. We read about countless individuals who say that Dr. Nemeh solved their complicated medical problems. The stories include simple, affirming tales of faith, staggering recoveries that baffle other doctors and genuinely heartbreaking, bittersweet accounts of patients who find peace when good health is beyond Dr. Nemeh's reach. As a result, we're forced to consider the notion that there is a connection between his work and his patients' healing.

If you go to the doctor and you get better, do you question the science behind your recovery? No, because the treatment worked for you. Dr. Nemeh's patients have a similar position toward the theology behind their recoveries. They have no reason to question it. So, let's consider this from the patient's perspective: They went to a doctor and they got better. That means one of two things: Either God is at work in the manner Dr. Nemeh believes he is, or there is something else afoot.

Zagrans wisely provides some science that allows us to consider the veracity of a non-God option here. Brain scans show that prayer stimulates the anterior cingulate (a piece of the brain about which I admittedly know little), which some doctors theorize, can be a valuable component in the healing process. It goes to show that regardless of how you come to believe that you are getting better, it's important to believe that you will get better. Other books point out that a resignation to physical ailments can exacerbate them. This isn't that kind of book, but it goes a long way to back up the theory that a good attitude can do a lot to heal the sick. For many, faith in God is a great path to a good attitude. Dr. Nemeh doesn't eschew traditional medicine. On the contrary, he seeks supplement it. "When medication and medical treatment do not have the complete effect, you add prayer. Prayer is sometimes the missing piece that can complete a healing," Dr. Nemeh says in what is easily my favorite line of this book.

And what of those who don't recover? Predictably, Dr. Nemeh can't heal a young, paraplegic girl. He says she's not ready to receive the healing. She lacks the faith necessary to facilitate the treatment. Is that really the case? Is a patient's faith the limit on Dr. Nemeh's power? Or does he really have this power at all? Again, it doesn't matter. Some people cannot be healed by means that are conventional or non-conventional. If you believe in God, you can attribute this to His plan. If you don't believe in God, it's easily explained by medical science. Either way, Miracles Every Day leaves you with a measure of hope. If you have the means to find faith in yourself, be it through God or elsewhere, there is a reward for that faith.

This book reveals what faith in God can do, and what true surrender of your life to God is. Dr. Nemeh never claims to heal, he states he is the instrument God uses. Some are healed because it is their time, some are not. Maybe because there is someone out there that can learn from their situation. A truly inspiring book about a devout, faithful servant of God and the miracles God has allowed to be through him. Uplifting and hopeful.
